The first post never collapses, and if it's a 700 word prompt, that's annoying.

Yes to linking them on fills post, no to AO3 because I'd like to stay anon.

Seconding the anon who said that a lot of people don't read WIPs at all. Also, most people don't notice new fills immediately, and even fewer check for updates to WIPs. I'm not sure what the etiquette is for linking updates to WIPs on the full list, but IMO the wisest options are finishing before you post or posting on AO3.

*fill list. Autocorrect hates me.

I don't reply to comments on my fills because of prompting space, but I don't think that's a legit excuse for anons or an OP to comment on fills.

I know that. I was responding to a comment about prompts using up one or two comment boxes, with the point being that you don't have to read the second comment.

IDK about AO3. Sure, it'll get more hits than the kink meme, but the fandom is exploding with fic so it's just as likely to get lost amongst other fics. There are a lot of great fics I've seen get lost in the shuffle on AO3.

But my personal opinion is that AO3 is turning into the new ff.net, so I could be biased.

You could always create a sock account. I post some of my kinkier fics under a separate AO3 account that's not linked to my online identity in any way.

AO3 is my jam because I like having all my favorite fics bookmarked in one place (I never quite figured out Delicious, Pinboard, etc.) but I will happily read long fills in multiple comments, too. I just bookmark them from the parent thread when I want to go back and reread them.

I was thinking AO3 because it allows readers to subscribe, since one of the main issues with WIPs on anon memes is that people forget to check back for updates. But you make a good point about fic getting lost in the shuffle.

I'm curious about this, too.

Agreed. If people are thinking "I don't want to say thank you to someone who GAVE ME A GIFT I ASKED FOR because then there's less space for prompts!" then they are employing some really fucked up mental gymnastics.

Re: How do authors deal with feeling discouraged?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Even if someone doesn't like a fill for their prompt, the least they can do is write a short reply thanking the author. It's an anon meme, so it's not like it's going to hurt.

TFA already has about 3,400 fics and it's only been a month since the movie was released. There's definitely fic getting passed over since so much is posted each day.

I have been getting a lot of amazing responses on Ao3, actually. It's been really encouraging. I wouldn't write it off!

Ayrt
That's true, you can. But you still have to scroll past the first 600 words or so before you can reach that button to avoid the next 250. (Iirc, DW allows 15,000 or 16,000 characters per post. I'm not sure how many words on average that is. But it's a lot. I have seen 400 and 600 words prompts that fit into one comment box.)

make an account under a name that's not the one you usually use. Or post then immediately orphan. In-meme response is always going to be miniscule compared to AO3

Re: best fandom wank

Not the anon who made the comment, but the general sense among a lot of people in fandom is that AO3's frequent donation drives are a scam. There hasn't been any real transparency about why they need thousands of dollars and it's sketchy that they're listed as a non-profit, but there's no official budget of what they need $200,000/year for and where that money goes.

Most of their board of directors resigned this past December after an election "scandal". AO3 members who paid a $10 membership fee were allowed to vote in the election. The candidate who came in last place for the empty seat ended up being chosen by the board over the first place winner.

Basically, it's a lot of inner circle drama and some shadiness regarding money. Rumors are that staff members are being paid even though AO3 is a volunteer-only platform and all donation money is supposed to go to hosting the site.

tl;dr: http://www.dailydot.com/geek/otw-board-resignation-controversy/
