Mirrorverse!characters are fairly popular these days. Particularly those at extremes of good vs evil. Particularly bad guys.

The bad guy in my fandom has had a fan-created mirror counterpart for years, complete with pinkness, sparkles and fluff, and whenever it crops up on my dash, I scroll on by. I'm not a huge fan of AUs, and what draws me to fandoms is the characters, so changing their personality doesn't appeal to me personally, but I think I get why others like it, and even if I didn't, it doesn't matter. People are allowed to enjoy things that you don't enjoy.

This this this! I wish there were gen rec lists or a gen tag on tumblr. It feels like we have no community.

There used to be one on LJ, and a few gen/case if big bangs. I miss LJ.

NA I totally agree. I love gen and I wonder if there can't be some sort of central place for us, like a DW community for people to share recs and talk. Or even a gen prompt meme?

Do any other fillers here struggle with how subtle to make certain parts of a fic? Like, on one hand the famous "show don't tell"-style subtly is broadly good - it gives the readers some credit, after all. But on the other hand, the readers aren't in my head and haven't been obsessively reading and writing this story for weeks. Maybe I'm too close to it?? I mean my beta's amazing, but they're still reading it a lot more carefully than any reader is going to and they also know what to expect from my style by now. Thoughts?

oh my god, mirrorverse. i don't think i've actually come across that in an active fandom since people turned the little russian guy from 'star trek' into a mutineer and a murderer. trippy shit, but as above-non says, it ain't my fucking place to complain/change/argue about someone else's interpretation of a character.

Ben's middle name isn't "Chewbacca" because Leia and Han are both Space Jews and Chewbacca is still alive; you don't name new children after living people. Only dead ones. It's actually "Beru."

Doesn't your beta do a general readability read first, to spot sections where it's confusing or it drags? Every beta I've had did.

I love Jews-in-space headcanons, they're so weird. Like, Judaism is so Earth-centric, but there's all these human-looking aliens who are somehow Jewish! Even when Earth isn't a thing! You just don't see this with other religions.

We're almost to the six-month "anniversary" of the debut of TFA. Do you feel that the tone and genre of TFA fanfic has changed significantly since the first month or two in which the fandom was active?

Well, there are a lot of Jewish Star Wars and Star Trek fans who get really excited when actors who play the characters are Jewish. Since there aren't many specific religions in the original Star Trek and just "the Force" in Star Wars, I think that leaves a lot of room to say, "Well, the actor is Jewish, so the character can be Jewish!"

Plus, Judaism is an ethnicity as well as a religion. And we have space Hispanics or at least space Guatemalans, we have space English people, we have space Victorian England and space Americans (cowboys), we seem to have space Japan and space Imperial China, space Jamaicans...why not space Jews that aren't "lol Watto"? (Because, ugh, fuck Watto.)

I feel that it has, a bit, in the Kylux part of fandom (which is basically the only part I reside in). I think that after it started out as a pretty small niche thing, the migratory slash fandom got its hands on it and this resulted in a lot of AUs that, if you changed the names of the characters, could have been any slashy original fic because it had nothing at all to do with the characters in question.
I feel that it has gone down again a bit, probably because the MSF moved on to Civil War and the new X-Men movie.

That's perfectly alright. I generally don't have a problem with the MSF, mostly because I just filter out the type of fics I don't like so it doesn't really bother me.

The more migratory fans do seem to have moved on. I see a lot more of unfinished wips now than in the beginning. Things are probably gonna be very slow until major spoilers, teasers and trailers start coming out again as focus shifts back to the summer blockbusters.

We have witnessed the raise and fall of ships, random characters and cats, of tropes and lots and lots of AUs. Many have come and gone truly.

Joking aside, yeah it has changed. The only thing that seems the same is the massive inflow of Kylux that came a couple o weeks into fandom. but even that as the previous anon said, has somewhat calmed down, at I see more focus on canon stuff.

Finny enough, not here, but on Tumblr I have seen a raise of Kylo Ren/self-insert stories in fandom. I'm surprised it hasn't cached up in here.

NA- He also thought Jar Jar Binks (you know, the big lipped CGI racist Rastafarian caricature trying to be "comedy relief" that was an instantly hated monstrosity) was going to be a fan favourite. He REALLY should have had his wife run interference on his ideas like with the originals...

This is the one that makes me feel like people that think everyone that ships Kylux only does it for the white guys is right

I am not speaking for everyone, but I am an Asian Woman raised and born in a white country (not USA).
since this is anon, I have no problems to admit, I do prefer white men both in real life and in fanfiction over any other ethnics and races, including my own one.
I am sorry though, if it offends you so much.
the only advice i can give is, just as others alraedy said, you could skip this kylux fandom, and look for the ones, where the characters are interesting and all from colour (chinese dramas? indian bollywood movies and television shows? south american telenovelas? I heard those countries have an film output larger than USA), so that this issue will not come up?

I would have thought, that's pretty much symptomatic and typical for any fandom, what you have described?
the change of tone and the increase of OOC characterization and expansion of genres?

Oh yeah, that's not quite issue. My beta's great about fixing confusion and readability. This more an obsessive tendency of "okay character A flushed, should I clarify that it's both anger and embarrassment? Readers would get that from context and it wouldn't matter if they didn't get both, right?" That, but for every ambiguous display of behaviour.
