Re: AUs

I don't know if it's considered an AU, but social media based fics make me uncomfortable. It's not so much fics where the characters are on social media, but third party OCs who are liveblogging an event that takes place to the characters. I think it's a little bit because those fics seem too much like a self-insert and a little bit because they almost seem to be breaking the fourth wall.

I don't know if other fandoms have them, but they've become popular in mcu. I'm glad I haven't seen any for Star Wars yet.

Aside from that, I do like historical AUs and I would love to see the political plot of TFA redone in different decades or centuries.

The most important fic ever written.

fic length

What are everyone's thoughts on fic length? Do you have a preference for long or short fic? Chaptered fic or oneshots?

Re: fic length

My favorite is fics made up of a bunch of short fics. Like 5-and-1's. So if there's a part I don't like I can easily skip it, but if there's other parts I do like it's not so short I feel left hanging. This is just a pref tho, it's also how I format all my own fics

Reading that improved my life dramatically.

I read very quickly, so I prefer fics around 20,000 - 50,000 words. I tend to avoid fics over 100,000 words because I've found a lot of them lose traction halfway through and drag on with no end in sight. Or they're full of way too many sex scenes and side plots that I end up skipping.

The same goes for fics with 50+ chapters. I like chaptered fic, but I also avoid WIPs because I've had too many bad experiences where an excellent fic was never finished. But I also enjoy shorter oneshots and a lot of my favorite fics are under 5,000 words.

Really, it depends what I'm in the mood for at the moment.

Character's name

the doctor lady who is treating Chewie in one scene, does she have a canonical name?

Effort.
I like effort. If I can see somebody put effort into something I can like it or at least respect it. I would rather wait 2 month for an update than some cobbled together.

You have a buch of ideas and scene you love? Good! Put work into it to craft them together and be proud of yourself. Or take the time to make each one into a comprehensible shortstory.

I remember her! (which say something as she was on the screen for seconds).
You could tell she had heared a lot "bog, dtrong, tough guys" complain.
If new EU is like old EU, she will get a name sooner or later.

It's the fic with the most kudos on AO3.

Is it really? That's amazing. In a good way, of course.

I'm assuming the anon was on a phone and meant to type "big, strong, tough guys."

I prefer longer one-shots, like 10k-20k ish. I will definitely still read fics that are around 1000 or 2000 if the concept is really good, but for me to really enjoy them they have to be centred around one main concept or event or just, you know, one goal the writer is trying to achieve. I hate short fics that cover a large range of emotions/events because they feel too superficial.

I prefer shippy fics, so i like to read them when they're long enough to provide some vague plot/reasonable build up to the romance part.

Super long fics tend to feel stretched out or repetitive.

As for writing, I'm lucky if I can bang out 100 words.

Yes, I find it hilarious that the fics with the most kudos are all Teen Wolf or Supernatural, but this parody fic is number one.

I have to admit, though, that when I was first sent it as a rec I read the summary and my first reaction was WTF DO NOT WANT until I realized what it was. All the kudos in the world to the author.

Re: fic length

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree about the super long fics feeling repetitive or stretched out. I think those are people who either can't edit their writing or want to include the smallest detail and piece of backstory for every place, person, or thing I'm looking at your grrm

In the novelization her name is Dr. Kalonia.

I generally avoid WIPs (5/? or 1/4) unless it's by an author I know and trust.

Depending on my mood, I'll read from 1k to 60k word fics. I think there's definitely a place for short fics and a place for long fics.

Re: fic length

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
i love long fic if it's well written and the author actually finishes it. i think around 400k words is the longest i've ever read. i definitely like some build up so i have a preference for 20k or longer stories, but i'll read anything.

I don't think there's one fic I could recommend because my tastes have changed so much over the years. What I liked in 2005 or 2010 is probably not something I'd like now. Whenever I go through old delicious or LJ or AO3 bookmarks, I'm always disappointed when I reread a fic I once loved to find that I no longer enjoy it.

That being said, I don't think the following fic is the best fic I've ever read, but it's one that I've loved for years: never too late to be who you might have been, X-Men, Charles/Erik; http://archiveofourown.org/works/220402
