It's not very active anymore (and it looks like the mod's been gone about a year by now), but http://hobbit-kink.livejournal.com was such a delight back around 2013, after the first movie released. ♥ I had really good times there, both in the main fandom and the RPF threads, and the fandom (both parts) is still perking along rather nicely on tumblr.
The only real wank that's popped up even off the meme is the usual RPF and anti-kink stuff you see from time to time. Very little of it's been notable.
(Disclaimer: I haven't really been there in ages, so there could be PAGES of wank I don't know about lmao.)

i remember star trek voyager, and how at that time, my classmates (all white) said:
but hey, you must ship harry kim, because he is Asian.

and i was like, huh??

I'll look into that one, I know one of my friends is a huge Hobbit fan, so even if it's not for me, she'd either be into it or already there, lol.
I always enjoyed the Dragon Age kink meme. I haven't visited for awhile, but I don't remember a lot of wank when I was there.

I need to go to bed after this post, but what you actually said was "I think the only pet peeve I do have is when people just find a trope for a character and run it to the ground." and then complained about a specific popular trope, which really didn't come across as discussion about canon vs. popular fanon(?) so much as... taking the opportunity to complain about a trope you don't like.
I guess there's a discussion in there to have about canon and fanon (and extremes of fanon), but I'm too tired right now, heh. Night!

If only people took half the energy they used in the discussion thread and put it towards fills/leaving nice comments on fills. Imagine what that world would be like lol.
But seriously, have others noticed a sharp decrease in lack of comments on fills? There's been a few times where I'm one of maybe three people total who have commented. I would say the meme was winding down, but the prompts keep coming in, and the discussion is always going.

Actually I come to places like this to write and read fills, not argue, so I haven't been bored on nicer memes. I just end up writing more fills because large sections of the meme haven't annoyed me to the point where I avoid certain pairings.

I am all for the ferengis from DS9...the things I learned what they were to supposed to represent and the race wankdrama surrounding the ferenigs about 20 years later..amazing! in case you did not know, they were supposed to represent Japanese people, which of course, went way over my head, not being American, and not know how Americans are able to decode all that kinds of things)
For me, there's been more fills on kinks or pairings I don't have interest in reading lately. Leaving a comment for the sake of it on something I didn't read seems disingenuous.

A bit, but there's a surprising amount of fic between the companion characters too. IIRC, people just tended to specify what class/gender they wanted and a decent number of fics just used to preset names for the characters - so Marian Hawke for DA2, etc.
You definitely have to hunt around for characterization you like, but I've found a lot of high quality fics in the fandom, so hunting around was worth it.

I've filled like 5 fills and I'm pleasantly surprised by all the comments so I don't know what you're talking about. Or maybe I'm just used to smaller kinkmemes wherein a lot of fills would get 4 comments if you were lucky.

Op: don't get me wrong, most of my fills have gotten 7-8 comments. But I check each post on flat view a couple of times a day, and I've noticed more fills that have less comments. Really it's only been two or three days, but it's been noticeable, and I feel bad for the authors because in my experience 80% of comments happen in the first day or so (I've done a couple dozen fills, so I'm just going off my own experience.)
