I want the novel so bad I'm considering not buying groceries for a week and getting the hardcover.

Does make me wonder if Snoke has a Smeagol though.

Everyone with sense hates tumblr and is only using it to look at the pretty.

It'd be nice, but really tricky to get the logistics worked out. However, if you buy a bunch you could probably sell them on Ebay to international buyers and make a packet.

Well of course they would.

I strongly advise you don't, because you'll be disappointed. It's definitely not better than food.

Okay, we get it. It's "cool" to hate tumblr. Stop bringing posting about how awful people are for using or liking it whenever it's mentioned.

Yeah, I'd say it doesn't come from tumblr either? Tbh I haven't really seen it be so prominent in any fandom I've been in until now, and it all seemed to flood onto AO3 all at once. I do remember seeing some similar things waaay back in the 2000s on FF.net, but never so many all at once I don't think?

I don't read porn, but there is non sexual Mary Sue/self insert fic, usually a character who helps rescue the heroes at great personal sacrifice and is admired for it. Give me an OC who takes care of the hero after rescuing them from a near deadly whumping, or takes the beating for the hero despite their protests and is brought back from the brink of death, and that's my self insert fic.

It's just so blameable.

No one's awful for using it.

A lot of people seem to think that though.

Sadly, I agree on the not better than groceries front. Do you have access to a library? Even if they don't own a copy, they can probably get you one from another library that does. That's how I got it.

I don't know if you're in the US or not, but once it's off the NYT hardcover bestseller list, the price will go way down.

POV!Anon who made initial comment.

Maybe? I used to come across them when I hanged out an old site, not sure if anyone even remembers it, Quizilla, and those type of stories were popular there. Mainly because Quizilla would actually let you do polls, so the readers had a lot of power where the story could go.

I think LJ and that site were popular around the same era.

Could it be these stories are reposts? AO3 does let you transfer your stories. This could be less of a growing trend and maybe new people moving into AO3 and bringing with them their old stuff.

omg Quizilla. I forgot that site even existed. What a throwback.

A lot of the ones I've seen are for newer fandoms, so I don't think that's the case.

I am not gonna lie, I prefer the author tags over the more annoying old school trope where the author would literally pause the story to leave an author note in the middle of the story.

Finn and Rey ran towards Kylo Ren.

AN-IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREAKING STORY: ISN'T KYLO REN SO HOT! LOL. PLEASE REVIEW AND FAVORITE FOR MORE!

Kylo Ren easily disposed of the two of them and turned towards his old Jedi Master, Luke.

Those were always present in badfic tho. And were way more popular on The Pit than LJ or anywhere else.

Re: Fic Recs

From personal experience, most big name authors I have come across tend to usually also be the ones who struggle the most with keeping the characters in character and heavily depend on using outdated cliches (one of the most well known Destiel fanfictions is an OOC mess that people have actually asked the author to publish and have printed out themselves). I tend to usually avoid their recs for that reason.

Maybe because at some point they get so big they no longer care about growing their writing since they will get praise either way Or they were always bad and people just ignore it for the sake of the familiar tropes.

Chekov/Sulu were never my preferred pairing, so what I did read of them was background or minor in other fics, but I'm curious how she characterized them?

Re: Fic Recs

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
As other poster said, a combination of all of the above. Lots of kudos, hundreds (sometimes thousands) of comments, gets constantly rec'ed and you can even find fanmade fanart/fanmixes/etc. about them (not just stuff a friend might make, but by strangers).

I have known authors who could in their heyday could easily get 50+ comments per chapter.

Honestly, I think it's because they tend to write popular tropes or kinks and a lot of people in fandom will read anything with a popular trope and popular pairing regardless of characterization.

A lot of people who use tumblr seem to assume that's what is meant.
