[Fill] Between the Here, Between the Now (2/2)
(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)“And what’s that song?” he asked, making Hux turn.
“You could have let me know you were on the return!” he admonished, but there was a pleased undertone to the rebuke. “Where were you anyway?”
“Yunta Winf is dead,” he said casually. “That’s where I was.”
Hux stared at him a long moment before saying, “Why exactly did you do that? You’ve never shown an interest in ridding the Order of gang lords.”
“I did it because she had this.” And with that, Kylo pulled out the soft red fur. Hux froze in place, staring at it with too-wide green eyes before a quiet noise escaped him, sounding raw and painful. He approached slowly, his hand reaching to touch his own pelt in quiet reverence, before Kylo draped it around Hux’s shoulders for him.
It molded to his figure, stopped being just a pelt and became a coat instead. A fine red fur coat that Hux closed his eyes and immediately cried into. He had his coat back. Sixteen years ago it had been taken from him, but he finally had it back. And that was more than enough to send even the most stoic of selkies to tears. “Buíochas a ghabháil leat,” said Hux, tears still slipping from his eyes as he kissed Kylo again and again. “Buíochas a ghabháil leat.”
Finally, when the tears were dry, Kylo ventured to say softly, “If you were to go back to the sea, I wouldn’t stop you.”
“Kylo, I know full well you don’t want me to go,” said Hux.
“No, but I wouldn’t stop you anyway. You’ve wanted to go back since you were four, I won’t stop you.”
“I can’t anyway. Arkanis is outside the Order, and I can’t just leave the Order anyway. But maybe someday, when the Order’s taken Arkanis, then we can go back for a day. My mother should still be there, selkies live longer than humans, usually, and she promised to be in the waves for me. I can’t go now, but someday we’ll go.”
--------
The Order had fallen, and the New Republic was as strong as ever. Kylo Ren was under house arrest from the begging of his mother, but no matter how they looked, General Hux had vanished entirely. It was a source of rage, the man with a war crime above all war crimes just gone? Impossible.
“Are they still looking for him?” asked Kylo, staring out over the sea from the estate’s window. Why he had bargained with his mother to be under arrest in this particular dusty old Arkani estate with flaking paintings of owls turning men to stone, overly hairy men, and kings at the hunt on his bedroom wall, no one could weasel out of him. But it was out of the way, and that was a blessing at least.
“Of course,” said Rey, come to visit. “They can’t just stop. Finn’s going to help the next round of searching. We think he went deep into old Order space.” Kylo just nodded, not saying anything for a long while.
When he did, all he said was, “I’m going down to the beach.” Rey nodded, allowing it. He spent so much time there, but she couldn’t blame him. The estate was nice enough, but one could go stir-crazy in there after a while, and no one wanted Kylo Ren going stir-crazy. He may not have a lightsaber, but he certainly still had the Force.
When Kylo reached the sea, he sat on one of the great rocks there and stared out over the water and sang with a clumsy accent, “Idir ann is idir as, idir thuaidh is idir theas. Idir thiar is idir thoir, idir am is idir áit.”
“Casann sí dhom amhrán na farraige, suaimhneach nó ciúin ag cuardú do damanta, mo ghrá,” finished another voice, that of the man who walked from the waves in a red fur coat. Behind him came a woman all in white, with large brown eyes that watched over her son. She didn’t trust men of the land, not after her son told her of the thirty years away from the ocean and the sixteen years without his coat. But for this man, who came to the sea so as to court her son, she was starting to build some affection for.
“They’re still looking for you,” said Kylo, once he let Brendol go, letting the water lap at his ankles. Brendol didn’t leave the water these days, never allowed his hair to fully dry out. Jakku must have been absolute hell to even think about, Kylo thought with a smile.
“They’ll not find him,” warned Eilis. “And you’ll not tell them.”
“Of course not,” said Kylo. “They still think they can put him on trial and kill him for what he did.”
“A selkie thirty years away from the sea? Anyone would go mad.”
“Mum,” said Brendol, turning to her. “Kylo knows. He’s the one who got my coat back, why would he sell me to the Republic now?” Eilis looked pacified at that, and let them turn to happier subjects. “I’ve made you a shell pipe,” said Brendol, handing Kylo a spiral shell with holes drilled into it. “You’re the worst at singing, if you play this I’ll come.”
Kylo took it and blew a curious note. It rang low and comforting, much like Brendol and Eilis’ voices when they sang. “Thank you,” he said. Brendol merely smiled. And in almost no time at all, Kylo was playing tunes on the shell while Brendol and Eilis sang.
Rey found him there that night, staring out across the water and playing his shell pipe to the empty waters. The sea was entirely impossible to her after a life on a desert planet, and she was in turn both hypnotized by and frightened of it. “Kylo, come on, back to the house. You’re going to freeze if you stay all wet out here,” she said. “Your mother’s come to visit too.”
The time by the sea made Kylo both happy and melancholy, and Rey cast a glance back to look out over the waters as they climbed back up to that old estate. “Kylo, look!” she cried, excitement filling her. “Seals! I thought they were supposed to be rare!” A white and a red seal were close to shore, side by side and looking as if they were actually aware and looking at the two of them. “Oh they’re beautiful.”
“They are,” agreed Kylo, and the two stood there until the seals vanished again.
That night, Rey could swear she heard a voice singing as she sat meditating. Coming from somewhere outside, somewhere near the sea, but there was no one around that she could see. But it was a voice that spoke to her soul as home, and perhaps that was why she didn’t search too hard for it. “Eudail mhòir a shulaigh an dòmhain dhòirt iad d’fhuil an dé, ‘s chuir iad do cheann air stob daraich tacan beag bho do chré. Dhìrich me bheinn mhòr gun anal, dìrich agus thearn. Chuirinn falt mo chin fo d’ chasan agus craicionn mo dhà làimh.”
song translations
(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)Seaweed song (Dúlamán): "What did you bring from land?" says the Irish seaweed. "Courting with your daughter," says the stately seaweed. "You're not taking my daughter," says the Irish seaweed. "Well, I'd take her with me," says the stately seaweed. Seaweed of the yellow cliff, seaweed of the mountain. Seaweed from the sea, seaweed.
Drowned lover song (Ailein Duinn): If the sand be your pillow, if the seaweed be your bed, if the fish are your candles bright, if the seals are your watchmen, ò hi, I would go with you, hì rì bhò ru bhì, hì rì bhò hò rinn o ho. Dark hared Alan, ò hì, I would go with you.
Kylo's return song (chì mi na mòrbheanna): I see as I linger the land of my birth; I am welcomed in the language I cherish. I will receive there hospitality, and love when I reach it that I'd not trade for tons of gold.
Final song (Ba Mo Leanabh): Darling, the people of the great world they spilt your blood yesterday, they put your head on an oaken post a little way from your corpse. I breathlessly climbed the great mountain, I climbed and I descended. I would put the hair of my head under your feet, and the skin of my two hands.
