and Poe opportunistically deciding that at least Hux will make him look good in comparison.

(and aw, poor Matt, thinking he was in the clear about coming out to Dad, only to find that Han's still traumatized about revelation # 2 to be properly Dadly about it.)

Aw. This is my new OTP and if I knew how to write this, I totally would. Millicent/Gary is just too cute for my mind to process.

Kylo and Hux lived in a five bedroom, four bath Mediterranean in Outpost Estates. It was a property they both hated, but it had been re-listed twice and languished for five months at an $800,000 general discount, so it was beginning to feel like home.

“You know what people say about this place,” said Finn, stopping by the office to check his to-do list. Kylo looked up from his drafting table, and almost smacked his skull against Hux’s chin.

“If you didn’t stick your face in my work,” said Kylo, “we’d have to take fewer trips to the E.R. to have your tongue surgically reattached.”

“If I didn’t keep an eye on your progress, you’d never get anything done,” said Hux. “It’s a retaining wall, not the Duomo.”

“And if you’d been around pedaling the mundane gospel of the bottom line in the fifteenth century, maybe we wouldn’t have that particular artistic precedent to squeeze a couple hundred thousand dollars out of plaster in Beverly Hills.”

“Well then, Arnolfo di Cambio, you’ve got about forty-five seconds to decide if you want flowers or succulents in your masterpiece.”

Finn cleared his throat. “So like I was saying, you know what people say about this place?”

Kylo gripped his pencil in his fist. “Succulents.”

“Good choice,” said Hux. “There’s a drought. Finn, is there something you’d like to say instead of taking the leaf blower up to the roof?”

“Yeah,” said Finn. “So. I was reading about this place on Curbed--”

“Your first mistake,” Kylo muttered.

“And they were listing all the celebrities who’ve sent buyers here -- Taylor Kitsch, Brandi Glanville, Brandon Routh, Camilla Belle -- it’s like everybody in Hollywood whose expectations ended up disappointed. Curbed says brokers have started calling it Starkiller.”

Hux tapped his chin. “Not that I care what Curbed says, but I think there’s something to that. Taunting superstition appeals to the self-made sort of ... thing.”

“We need to have the house saged again,” said Kylo. “I don’t care about Curbed either, but, you know, just in case."

Hux sighed. “Finn, clean the gutters. Then schedule someone to come sage.”

“Poe Dameron,” said the agent they booked the next morning. He sat uncomfortably in the sunken living room, facing Hux across his open portfolio, and cast nervous glances at Kylo, who was looming near the exit. “Wow, you guys really went to town with the sage.”

“We don’t like to leave anything up to fate,” said Hux. “Finn, bring Mr. Dameron a shot of espresso over ice.”

“Hey, that’s my drink,” said Poe, looking between Kylo and Hux. “Exactly. How did you…”

“Like I said,” said Hux. “Nothing. To. Chance. I hope you’ll appreciate that the home’s temperature has been set to an even 69 degrees, just as you like it.”

Poe adjusted his tie. “Wow.”

“Here’s your espresso,” said Finn. “Let me know if it’s too much ice, or not enough espresso or, you know.”

Poe smiled the brave smile of a broker about to hear about three floors of original Talavera flooring. "Thanks for the -- thanks. Well, I guess let’s get started.”

“I’m orchestrating a full court press on this property,” said Hux. “Even since a certain article in Curbed came out, I’m eager to show it off and turn around people’s assumptions.”

“I don’t read Curbed,” said Poe.

“Neither do I,” said Kylo.

“This restored estate,” said Hux, “combines old Hollywood glamor with the vernacular charm of some of LA’s first great architectural pieces. Although the approach is private and set well back in the lot, the home emerges as one of the gems of Outpost.”

Finn watched them go.

“So that broker thinks they’re going to murder him,” Finn told Rey, who had been using their solitude to send tips to Curbed from the vacant poolside.

“Seriously though,” said Rey. “Are they?”

“I don’t know, they might. But who wants to buy a place called Brokerkiller?”

“Who wants to buy a place where each room has a color scheme?”

Finn shrugged. “I don’t know. The rich.”

“The rich have kind of had their chance. I think the guys should suck it up and live here. It suits them. The atrium for the cat. The counter-espionage room with the four Nest cameras. There’s even that really deep wine cellar, for when Ren finally cracks and tells Hux he’s got a nice Amontillado in the back.”

Finn sighed, looked around for any new Nest cameras, and took one of the white lounge chairs next to Rey. “I guess you have a point.”

“Not really,” said Rey. “I’m a total hypocrite. I’m trying to whip up some notoriety behind their backs, but only Curbed writes up my tips.”

“You have a heart of gold,” said Finn, adjusting his sunglasses so less light leaked in around the frames. The pool was hypnotically bright, glittering in aimless patterns as the light wind died down. The sunlight was hot without being miserable.

The next thing Finn knew, someone was shaking his arm.

“Hi,” said Poe Dameron. He was alone, wearing a contrast-collar shirt and no suit jacket, and the earnest expression on his face was desperate.

Finn blinked, and pulled down his sunglasses. Rey was gone. The sunlight hadn’t changed, so he couldn’t have been asleep for long. “Uhm,” he said, looking at the real estate agent in total confusion. “So this is the pool.”

“I have to get out of here,” said Poe.

“OK,” said Finn. “What?”

“It’s -- the ceiling beams, the tile, the color schemes -- I don’t have a buyer for this,” said Poe. “But they’re holding me hostage in there until they get my active clients. Is there like, a back exit? A secret tunnel? Escape route through the wine cellar? Scheduled airlift?”

“Where are they?” said Finn. “I want to help you, buddy, but I also don’t want to lose my job.”

“Upstairs,” said Poe, and looked a little ashamed. “I said I had to go outside to vape.”

“You can vape inside,” said Finn. “That’s literally the point.”

“I don’t vape,” said Poe. “I want to be clear about that.”

“The gate’s right behind those palms.”

“Thanks,” said Poe, and reached into his wallet. Finn’s eyes took in a few hundreds thirstily, but then Poe took out a business card and gave it too him while briskly shaking Finn’s other hand.

Then he was gone.

A moment later, Hux and Kylo spilled out of the sliding doors.

“I think he got away,” Kylo was saying. “We can’t keep letting agents just slip off like that.”

Rey gets lunch but it's extremely ambiguous who pays. When Kylo and Hux aren't fighting they are making money or napping on yachts or looking at their phones during Sadhana class or smacking each other on the ass with a lambskin paddle, or stuck in traffic. Normal LA stuff.

Thank you! The cat predates Kylo in this relationship so there's a little bit of foundational tension between them.

“Are you alright, sir?” Mitaka finally asks, with practiced nonchalance, after several minutes of fussing with sensor readouts for what even Hux can see from across the bridge is an empty patch of space. He’s prepared for the question.

“What do you mean?” he asks. Brisk. Uncomprehending. Hux is a much better liar than Mitaka. He’s been doing it longer.

“Your-“ Mitaka makes a vague gesture to the side of his own face, just under his cheekbone.

Hux makes a dismissive sound. “That?” he says, as though he had completely forgotten. As though he hadn’t spent ages staring at the blossoming purple bruise creeping up his jawline in the mirror that morning, engrossed in the play of colors on his own pale face. “Phasma put me through my paces in the sparring ring yesterday. I’ve gotten dreadfully out of practice,” his mouth quirks in a self-deprecating smirk, which tugs at the split in his bottom lip. He licks his lip and tastes copper. “It looks worse than it is.”

Hux very deliberately does not look at Kylo Ren. Doesn’t even glance in the man’s direction, although he can feel him looming just outside the edge of his vision, seemingly staring out one of the viewports. He doesn’t have to see Ren to know exactly where he is in a room at any given time. The air around the man crackles with some unseen energy. He distorts everything around himself, like a black hole, pulling at Hux’s attention, urging him to look. He doesn’t.

Ren didn’t usually mark his face. Hux is an old hand at hiding bruises beneath the high collars and long sleeves of his uniform. He’s been doing it since he was a boy. Hiding his face was harder, unless Ren expected him to follow his lead and start wearing a ridiculous mask everywhere. Still, he will rise to the challenge. Ren, on the other hand, seems to be settling for not looking him in the face when they are in public.

Hux busies himself with an irregularity in a coordinate log, leaning over the Lieutenant’s shoulder, his back to Ren.

They all had their vices. Kylo Ren had his temper. Hux had this.

The sweet, sharp crack of relief- of hands around his neck, a knee in his stomach doubling him over, of a gloved hand across his face- the payoff after weeks of building anxiety. The release of the crackling tension that had been built up between them, choking all the air from the room. It was a blissful feeling, no longer having to worry when the next blow would come, because it was here, it was over with.

Some of his best memories of childhood were of that calm after the storm, when his father’s rage was spent.

Ren is always so deliciously apologetic afterwards. He kisses the bruises he’s left. Mutters apologies and promises against Hux’s skin as he fucks him, sweetly, into the mattress. “I’ll do better,” he said last night, contrite, curled around Hux from behind. “I know I’ve got to do better.” He pressed a kiss just under Hux’s ear. Grateful for the chance to try again. As if Hux didn’t plan it, didn’t know exactly what he was doing when he pushed and pestered, dropping disdainful comments and snide remarks until Ren’s atom-thin patience snapped.

He wonders sometimes if Ren is on to what he is doing. If he knows he’s being provoked. Hux doesn’t know if it would make things better or worse if Ren did realize.

Later tonight he will prod at the split in his lip with his tongue until it bleeds. Then, just as carefully, he will badger Ren- the lack of results his little hunting expedition has turned up, perhaps -picking at flaws until Ren unclasps his mask, shoves Hux up against the wall right there in the hallway and kisses him just to silence him. “Greedy,” Ren will say, tracing the cut on his lip with a thumb. Hux will agree, groaning, and drag him back down by his hair, smearing the blood between their mouths. He’s always greedy just after they’ve fought- hard up and desperate for it at all hours of the day. He’s earned it, after all. If he’s careful about it, he can milk a few more nights of indulgence out of Ren before the whole thing begins again.

oh god the cask of amontillado line! i love this whole thing so much

This continues to be the very best thing. Oh my god, Poe's escape from Starkiller re-imagined as an estate agent sneaking out of a lemon property is just magical. MAGICAL.

There’s even that really deep wine cellar, for when Ren finally cracks and tells Hux he’s got a nice Amontillado in the back.

FUCKING AMAZING. There's nothing to worry about though, Kylo would probably take too long sourcing the right bricks and then agonize over how to arrange them in a modern gothic aesthetic -- while Hux scoffs critically the whole time, "For the love of god, Ren."
