FILL: (finn/poe) figure skating AU 1/?
(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 07:16 am (UTC)(link)Poe groans, quickly takes an inventory of the damage (shoulder: sore but okay, side: probably would bruise but the ribs are alright, hip: a suspicious twinge and more pain than usual, he’ll need to stretch it out before his skate), and then there is a hand in front of him reaching out.
“Hey, you okay?”
Poe’s gaze follows up the hand and arm to see a kid with warm brown eyes staring down at him, concerned. He looks sort of familiar – Poe thinks he maybe remembers seeing him in Juniors competitions last year. Phil? Fitz? Something like that. Poe takes the offered hand and the kid (Franz?) pulls him up.
“Yeah, thanks man, I’m good I think. Just need to shake it off.”
The kid smiles, claps him on the arm and glides away, disappearing into the mess of other competitors.
The twinge turns out to be something after all, and when he kicks off into the first jump of his free skate Poe feels a sickening tearing sensation. He opens up out of the jump and two-foots the landing, wincing in pain as he clutches at his hip. There is an audible gasp from the audience as he stands there, half bent over and shaking, his music continuing without him before someone mercifully thinks to shut it off.
It feels like it takes ages, but he makes his way toward the boards, painful and slow, Coach Organa meeting him halfway, sliding along in her dress shoes.
“It’s okay, Poe. It’s going to be okay,” she says, as she slips an arm around his waist. He leans into her tiny frame and lets her take some of his weight. It still always surprises him to feel how strong she is. He takes a few deep breaths and tries to blink back the stinging in his eyes. Maybe whatever he’d done isn’t as bad as it feels and he’ll be back after a couple weeks of rest. He’d been in second place after the short program, maybe they’ll send him to Worlds anyway.
Poe lets himself be eased down into a waiting wheelchair (“Just a precaution, I’m sure it’s nothing serious,” Coach Organa said, but the tension in her face undercut some of the comfort of the statement), and he keeps his head down as they wheel him out of the rink. This way he won’t have to see Kylo Ren’s smirk as he’s about to take the ice, the path to a national title now clear.
It also means that he doesn’t see Finn, whose worry-filled gaze follows him the whole way out of the building.
Poe doesn’t make it to Worlds.
Poe has two surgeries and three screws in his hip. He learns how to pronounce things like femoroacetabular impingement and hobbles around on crutches for ten weeks. He throws himself into physical therapy all summer long, but when the new season rolls around and the doctors don’t clear him to compete, he falls apart a little. He keeps working on strength training and rehab, but his heart isn’t in it. He refuses to follow the competition results and glares at Jess and Snap whenever they start talking rankings in front of him.
Coach Organa tells him, “it’s just one season,” and “you’re still young, you’ve got plenty of time,” and “for god’s sake Dameron, go enjoy your break – gain ten pounds, get laid, just do something besides sulking around my rink.”
The truth is, Poe doesn’t know how to do anything else. The ice is the only place he’s every really felt at home – the speed and the power, the exhilaration of pushing his body to its limits to create something beautiful. His mother used to joke that he was born with blades on. She’d skated in an exhibition when she was five months pregnant with him, he got his first pair of skates for his second birthday. Poe doesn’t know who he is if he’s not on the ice.
Coach Organa seems to understand his distress, and she finally relents and lets him help teach youth classes twice a week.
“Absolutely nothing strenuous,” she commands. “If I see so much as a waltz jump you’re barred from the rink for the next month.”
Which is how Poe meets Finn for the second time.
