Ben Solo, genderqueer

Snoke never cared if Kylo Ren wore extravagant, expensive dresses. How will the reaction be among the Rebellion?

[FILL] Eileen Silk

(I don't know if this was what you were looking for, OP, but I tried)

Some days he just wanted to wear a dress, he felt better like that. It wasn’t anything over complicated, and it didn’t change that when he was “on duty” he would wear his robes like his uniform like anyone else. But Lieutenant Kinsley, when she took her very, very rare leave on First Order planets, wore dresses. And no one bothered her about it. And when Brigadier General Gainsborough took his even rarer leave he wore more relaxed slacks. And no one looked twice.

What someone wore when they were off duty was their own business, and no one bothered to interfere. So long as you wore your uniform on duty and did your job, no one batted an eye. So when Kylo didn’t have anyone to meet that day and was left to his own devices to train or meditate, sometimes he wore a dress, was that so bad?

The First Order didn’t really pride itself on fashion, but people certainly cared about their appearance like anywhere else in the galaxy. So he had a small collection of dresses he liked to wear just as much as his more masculine robes. Sitting in a dark room and meditating, who cared if he wore black robes that marked him a Knight of Ren or if he wore a long deep blue dress decorated with violet embroidery with a short silken cape of violet trailing behind him?

And even in the incredibly rare times that Snoke had summoned him when he was wearing a dress of structured black velvet with a billowing skirt of silver, it had only been met with acceptance. Snoke didn’t care if he was loyal in pants or a skirt, just so long as he channeled the dark side.

So when Ben came back and Snoke was gone, when he was slowly becoming something approaching sociable, when Uncle Luke asked him to help with the new Younglings (once they had collectively gotten over their fears of letting him near any living being not able to restrain him and hold their own), who was he to know that despite that the Resistance hired those of different species unlike the First Order, they weren’t quite as accepting?

He wasn’t on duty when he went to sit with Uncle Luke, technically, so how was he to know that wearing a dress of deep green with delicate transparent sleeves that showed his muscled arms wasn’t especially smiled upon? At first he didn’t notice, too concerned with how his hair refused to be held back by the combs, but when he stopped to readjust them, he noticed the two technicians staring at him, whispering at each other. He recognized that, he knew that they were talking about him, but he had promised his mother he wouldn’t give in to any of his old urges to hurt people (that certainly wouldn’t help people think he wasn’t going to hurt them) so he just kept going, meeting Uncle Luke and Rey with the Younglings in the forest.

They were just meditating that day, which had been why Ben decided that wearing the dress he chose was alright, because the sleeves could be easily cut and repairing them would be too much of a fuss for him to justify wearing it if they were doing anything more strenuous. And when he joined them, a Twi’lek Youngling cocked his head and asked, “Why are you wearing that, Master Ben?”

“Because I wanted to,” he answered simply, sitting beside his uncle with his skirts pooling out around him. Rey kept glancing at him too, but she had been a scavenger most of her life and was probably thinking how many rations a dress like his could get her. It was made of Eileen silk, the finest available from Temmu, so it probably would have kept her well-fed for a year.

“I want a dress like Master Ben’s!”

“First you have to meditate,” said Luke gently, and they fell into practice without much hassle.

But afterwards, when they went to eat, Ben realized that those technicians hadn’t been staring at him for who he was, but because he was wearing a dress. That became clear when nearly everyone in the base’s mess hall turned to see the arrival of the Jedi and more than a few people immediately started laughing. Ben’s face began to burn, feeling humiliation and remembering that this was why he had hated the Resistance so much. Even when he was little they had done this, no wonder he hadn’t fallen apart at the idea of destroying them.

Uncle Luke nudged his mind away from that dark path, a gentle touch reminding him, but it was hard to alleviate the burn of humiliation as people laughed at him. “There’s nothing wrong,” assured Uncle Luke. “They’re just not used to the idea of someone like you feeling better in a dress some days.” The platitude wasn’t much to help, and Ben still wanted to turn and run away, back to his room where no one could see him. “If you run away it’s only going to get worse.”

This was why he didn’t like that nearly everyone who knew him and was near kind to him was Force sensitive and could read his emotions so well.

Still, sitting beside the young Twi’lek who had wanted a dress like his as they all ate together, he could feel the burn of stares and hear the laughter, and wished he hadn’t held his hair back with those combs, so he wouldn’t have to see everyone around him snorting at the idea of big scary Kylo Ren in a dress. The First Order had been more accepting about this, and what did that say about the Resistance?

“Nice dress,” commented Poe Dameron, coming to sit next to Rey, and Ben’s blush got even worse, stabbing at his meal. Poe was allowed to dislike him and hate him if he wanted, yes, but it didn’t make it any easier to bear.

You don’t deserve to be hated, reminded Luke.

Please get out of my head, Uncle, muttered Ben.

“Poe, be nice,” said Rey vaguely, but she clearly wasn’t too concerned about his feelings. Just because she had made peace with him didn’t mean she was going to stop anyone else.

“That’s a new one, isn’t it?” asked Finn, the earnest question surprising him. “Sorry, just I saw a few of your dresses back on the Finalizer and I don’t remember this one.”

“I got it after you defected,” said Ben uncertainly. “From Temmu.”

“It’s beautiful.” And it was so earnest that he didn’t feel quite so bad.

Still that evening, when he wore a nightgown of silver silk, his mother mentioned feeling his upset. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t think that they would laugh at you.” Ben merely shrugged. “I suppose I should have, you’re right.”

“I know you want me to be normal, but this is my normal and I’m not going to change that,” he said. He didn’t want to give up his dresses, that would be awful, what was he to do on days when he didn’t feel as masculine as he was supposed to?

“I know. And everyone’s going to have to get used to it. For the record I thought it was a beautiful dress, even if I don’t like First Order fashion that much.” Ben smiled to himself at that, and untucked his legs from under himself, stretching out on the sofa beside his mother rather than curling into himself protectively.

And the next day, when he wore a dress of scarlet next to his mother, no one dared laugh with the General glaring them down. They would be used to her son wearing dresses just as often as pants if it was the last thing she did. She couldn’t protect her son when he was young and vulnerable to the grooming of Snoke, but she would protect him from pointless prejudices.

Not OP, but this is really cute and very nicely done! I like the idea of genderqueer Ben, and the dichotomy between how the First Order and Resistance react to it is an unexpected, though intriguing one. I really like how supportive Leia and Luke are, and the adorable little Twi'lek boy, and how Finn (who very likely has as much reason as Poe and Rey to be cool towards Ben) is the one who's kind about Ben presents himself.

Seriously, really lovely little fill. Thank you for sharing it!
