His son pushes the lightsaber on his hand. Han expected the sharp pain through his heart, but before he can blink Ben guides it through his own.

For a second I honestly thought that was what was going on the first time I watched the movie. Dude was so miserable.

Holy shit, yes.

Han was not as optimistic as Leia. He lacked her faith and her foresight. Each breath he drew on that catwalk he was sure would be his last. His son wasn't coming home. And in all likelihood, neither was he.

But when he saw his son's face for the first time in more than a decade, when he heard that tortured confession, when he felt the sharp edges of the makeshift lightsaber in his hand, Han Solo felt his heart flutter in his chest. Maybe... maybe Leia was right. Maybe there was still a flicker of Ben Solo left in the monster that called himself Kylo Ren.

"Will you help me?" he asked.

Han's eyes never left his son's. He answered, without hesitation, "Of course."

"...Thank you."

That was when he heard the lightsaber ignite.

Han gasped. His heart stopped for a moment before he realized the pain he felt was merely anticipation. It wasn't real. The unstable plasma hadn't run him through. Instead, his son had turned his weapon on himself.

"No no no no no..." Han fumbled with the hilt. The beam retracted and a prodigal son slumped forward into his father's shaking arms. "Ben... No, Ben!"

Those tortured eyes were wide, and in them, Han could see an ache that stretched across star systems. He saw the lonely, confused boy being shipped off to his uncle and the temper that masked feelings of inadequacy and shame. He heard the taunts and temptations of that wretched Supreme Leader, and the length his son was used and abused to prove his own worth. He felt the war between darkness and light, death and destruction by day and the soft hand of an otherwise emotionless General at night. And somewhere, in the farthest reaches of his mind, he heard an ancient Jedi master whisper, as though it had happened a million times before, 'Once the choice is made, the way is through, not back. If he is destroyed, others will not perform the destruction. He will destroy himself.'

"Ben!!"

Han shook his son as those terrifyingly expressive eyes rolled back into his head. Blood dribbled out the side of his mouth and he fought for the few breaths was still able to take.

"Ben..."

Somewhere behind him, the Wookie roared, Stormtroopers fired and Rey shouted something about detonators. But all Han could hear was his own heart pounding in his chest while his son's heart stopped beating all together.
