So sometime in the future, Poe, Finn, and Rey are together, and Rey is having a baby at home. Rey is a badass and Finn and Poe are really sweet and comforting and supportive throughout her labor and delivery.

Awww, ok, I want this.

Rey goes into labour in the middle of the night. She heaves herself out of bed, dying for the toilet and teeters her way to the bathroom, only something isn't right. She doesn't usually urinate for a minute continuousely.

She squints at the bright light and tries to think through the sleep fog, then it hits her.

Her waters have broken.

Of course it would happen two weeks early and at the most inconvenient time possible.

Oh, for fuck's sake. she thinks, then shouts for Finn and Poe.

They set up the pool in record time as she sits on a blanket and feels the first cramps spread up across her hips and back. They aren't the worst pains she's had by a long shot.

Finn gets the water running and Poe gives her shoulders a rub, digging out the knots. She feels a little like a boxer being prepared for a fight.

"I'm okay." she says, and he ties her hair up for her. "But thank you."

He smiles sleepily and she kisses his forehead.

A couple of hours in and the contractions have ramped up to about a 6 on the pain scale the antenatal nurse had given her.

Finn holds her hand and looks at her like she's giving him the world. Poe takes out the mircrodermal painkiller patches and sticks them to the small of her back.

"You're doing so good." he says, and she huffs out a laugh.

"I know." she says.

It's been 6 hours and she's exhausted, but determined. The patches have kicked in and although it still hurts, is still agony, they stop the pain going bone deep.

The contractions come much quicker now. About 3 minutes apart. She closes her eyes and thinks back to the latest appointment she had.

2-3 minutes apart and you can start pushing. Weakly at first, play it by ear. You'll know by instinct. Have a holopad nearby if you need assistance from me or any of the medical team. You can do it.

She turns so that she's knelt up, squatting, and physically feels the baby shift.

Poe and Finn each have one of her hands. She hopes they're ready for her to deathgrip clutch at their fingers.

She takes a deep breath.

It's time.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" she shouts as bears down hard.

Finn dutifully wipes her brow with a towel dipped in ice water. It soothes her, just a little. Makes it easier to think through the pain. He's fetched her a small tank of gas and air from the med bay and she sucks a breath of it down greedily. Breathe in, breathe out, breath of the gas, breathe out.

Poe is changing towels, sorting the water temperature, doing everything he can not to be still. He's a tough guy, sure, but seeing either of them in pain is his achilles heel. He can't cope with it.

She pants and Finn holds her.

"Come on," he says. "Breathe. Breathe. Are you okay? You're okay, right?"

She nods.

She remembers the nurse's words. You'll know when it's time.

When the next wave of agony passes through her she bites down hard on the fabric of Finn's jumper and swears.

And she pushes.

Their daughter is born 8 hours and 24 minutes after her waters broke.

Rey bursts into tears as soon as she scoops her out of the water, and Finn and Poe both cut the cord, holding the scissors and clamps between them.

She's perfect. She's absolutely perfect. She's got a shock or dark hair and big brown eyes, and she's screaming her tiny lungs out.

Rey pulls her against her chest exhaustedly, her beautiful baby daughter.

"Hello." she says. "Welcome to the world."

Finn kisses her, then the baby, then Poe. He's beaming.

Poe is tearing up. They're all tearing up.

Together they lift her out of the water and lay her down on the fresh, warm towels they've put on the bed.

Rey props herself up and wraps the baby in a blanket Poe passes to her. She's calmed a little but she's still chuntering. Rey adjusts her so that she can latch on to her breast. Her first meal! Her tiny hands clench and unclench, 10 perfect fingers. Her eyes are closed, long lashes laid on her cheeks. She smells perfect, like all of them rolled together somehow.

She's amazing and brilliant Rey has never felt quite so content as she is now, Finn and Poe either side of her, their daughter safe between them.

There's a knock at the door and the midwife comes in, just to check her over. She congratulates them, and Rey beams.

Everything is perfect.

Oh wow. This is absolutely perfect. Just what I wanted. I love how tough and practical Rey is, the different ways the boys cope with the whole affair, the hands-off approach of the space midwives. Thank you so much!
