FILL: The Twisted Workings of the Dark Side 6/6
(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)Or, rather, if Kylo Ren would react to it.
Rey had yet to learn to use the Force for healing, but it didn’t stop her from trying. She spent hours beside the cot, her hands resting above the old, near-useless bacta patches. In the back of her mind, she could almost visualize the internal bleeding that had yet to clot. She tried to focus her mind to put pressure enough to curb the flow. Unfortunately, it was Kylo Ren who was the expert in force-assisted telekinesis, not her.
Finn hadn’t moved either. Ren’s head was in his lap, and he found himself inadvertently stroking that sweat-covered brow. There were a few involuntary shivers, but Ren was still unconscious. Fever had consumed him quickly. The brutal surgery was the fastest breeding ground for infection he’d ever seen, and he’d witnessed quite a few of his fellow troopers lose their limbs.
The baby was dead, and it was obvious that Ren was dying.
“You think we should chance getting him out of here?” Poe finally whispered. Consent was impossible, but leaving him here really was a death sentence – a fact proved when Finn let out a nervous breath.
“There isn’t time for that.”
“Are you sure?"
This time, it was Rey who corroborated it. As she pulled away, Ren’s pulse fluttered under Finn’s fingers.
“He’s bleeding inside. It’s infected… I can’t stop it.”
“How much longer do you think he…”
“An hour. Maybe.” Finn whispered. “…But it’s doubtful.”
Poe sighed, picking up the bundle he’d so carefully wrapped. Just as carefully, he positioned it on Ren’s chest, and lifted those lifeless arms over it. Rey questioned, but Poe couldn’t explain. Just that it seemed right. The dark side of the force was twisted, but every mother deserved to at least hold the child they carried. Just in case.
A quiet moan escaped Ren’s lips and his arms seemed to tighten just a little. Poe noticed, and immediately turned away.
Rey moved after him, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“We did everything we could.” she consoled the inconsolable. “You did everything you could. You brought him light when he was swollen with darkness.”
Poe froze under her touch. The soothing sound of her voice was at war with the emotions that racked his heart. The First Order would have had the means to keep him alive.
“He trusted me…”
Poe shuddered as he thought about what the Supreme Leader might have done in his place. Could Ren have survived whatever torture passed for training? Would he be violated again? How badly? How soon?
Death, perhaps, was the only way out. Perhaps it was the most merciful option he had.
“He probably still does.” She turned him around gently. “And in the time he has left, he likely still will. Sit with him. Bring him some peace.”
She couldn’t say he deserved it. Kylo Ren was still their enemy, the deadly enforcer of the First Order. But it was just as Rey felt when his ship first went down. Something was terribly wrong, and it was within their power to do something about it.
Poe nodded softly, taking his place by Kylo Ren’s side and placing a hand atop his chest. He died soon after, the remaining sliver of light becoming one with the Force. Finally, there was no more pain.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 05:25 am (UTC)(link)Thank you so much for filling my prompt with this amazing story! I feel like I know what Rey was going through when she was experiencing Kylo's pain.
Also, your characterizations are perfect. I loved that both Rey and Finn were so naive about Kylo's situation. Poe was so wonderful and caring.
The ending made me cry, I actually cried
I don't want to sound greedy, (I am though) but I was wondering If you could add a small alternate ending where Kylo and the baby live? The ending is so very sad
ALT ENDING FILL: The Twisted Workings of the Dark Side (now slightly less twisted)
(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 03:59 am (UTC)(link)Things seemed a little calmer after that, or perhaps the last bit of his energy was finally spent. Ren sunk against Finn, breathless and panting. Rey regained her feet and ignited the lightsaber again. Poe mouthed a simple, ‘thank you’ to the man he was determined to successfully deliver the baby of.
When the lightsaber connected with his abdomen, whatever soothing connection the force may have granted was severed. White hot agony begot a breathless scream and a ripple in the Force that could be felt three star systems over. Ren’s eyes rolled back into his head.
“He blacked out!” Finn shouted. He pressed his fingers against his neck, desperately trying to find a pulse. The fact that Ren hadn’t blacked out sooner was a radical testament to a tolerance for pain his dark side master had bred into him.
Poe, meanwhile, was pulling back the wound. The only saving grace of a lightsaber was that it cauterized as it cut. There was less blood, but it was still enough to make this a seemingly impossible task.
“A little deeper! I can feel something!”
He pulled his hands out as Rey cut again. The heartbeat throbbed under Finn’s fingertips, Ren’s body convulsing as though the pain had nowhere else to go.
Water broke and membranes ruptured. Rey had the force to guide her, but she couldn’t be certain she hadn’t nicked another organ in the process. As soon as Poe pulled the baby out, she was pulling the wound closed and sealing it with two bacta patches.
At first, there was a stillness in the air that threatened to suffocate all of them. Ren’s heartbeat dipped. For a moment, Finn thought he’d stopped breathing. Poe had the baby in his hands, rubbing its back, trying everything he could to elicit a cry, and finally... his ears were gifted with the most beautiful sound in the world.
Rey breathed a sigh of relief. Finn actually cheered, almost jostling the unconscious Kylo Ren right out of his lap.
"Rey, your lightsaber. One more time." He'd grabbed a blanket from the makeshift cot and started swaddling the newborn. "Cut the rest of this cord off. It's a girl. Isn't she beautiful?"
"She doesn't have her mother's nose." Rey found herself laughing a little. Everything still felt very unreal, and if she wasn't holding the child with her own two hands, she would have sworn everything was just a force vision. "Now what?"
"We wait until he comes to." Poe replied. He'd given his word, and he intended to honor it.
The next few hours were surprisingly just as tense as the previous ones. Finn kept busy by replenishing the wet cloth on Ren's forehead, trying to stave off the beginnings of a fever. Rey did her best to encourage healing through the force. Poe, unfortunately, couldn't stop himself from imagining the fate this defenseless child might be doomed to. Would the monster of a Supreme Leader order the baby killed? Would Kylo Ren be given the ultimatum to do it? Could she possibly live long enough to be fodder for the next wave of Stormtroopers? For a split second, he actually hoped Ren wouldn't wake up. Then, they could take the child somewhere safe, somewhere where the First Order would never think to look...
But no, he'd given his word. Kylo Ren had been tortured enough. When the man's eyes started to flutter, Poe was the first to put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Your daughter is here. Would you like to hold her?"
Ren was still weak, exhausted from the agony of labor, but the awe in his eyes was unmistakable. He nodded weakly, and Finn helped him sit up. Carefully, Rey handed the bundle to her sworn enemy.
"My... My daughter?" He managed to choke out a few words. The harsh lines of his face melted in a new mother's glow. Tears stuck to the edges of his eyes.
"Yeah. She's yours." Poe nudged him gently. "Do you have a name picked out?"
He didn't. If the Supreme Leader intended for the child to survive, he would give it a name. If not... it was best not to get too attached. Harsh reality hardened his heart again. The hopes and dreams that filled the new mother's heart crashed like his shuttle in the forest.
"... Now what are you going to do now?" Rey broke the uncomfortable silence.
Ren didn't answer at first. When he did, his voice was heavy with regret. "I'll be stealing your x-wing. I must return to my master to complete my training."
He had no choice.
His newborn daughter, on the other hand, did.
"Take her with you..." He finally whispered. His voice shook as the tears he tried to hold back fell freely down his cheeks. "Give her to my mother. She'll know what to do. At least, she'll know what not to do."
Snoke would likely sense the child anyway, but if he could buy her even a little time, it all seemed worth it somehow.
"I'll tell the Supreme Leader that I was shot down, that I cut her out myself... That I cut too deep, and killed her with my lightsaber..." It was a believable story as long as his emotions didn't get in the way. If Snoke called his bluff, his punishment would be even more severe. He tried not to think about the unthinkable possibilities as he handed the newborn to Poe.
He trusted him, more than he trusted the Supreme Leader. More than he trusted himself.
"I'll make sure she's taken care of. And you..." Even Poe's voice faded, but Rey finished for him.
"May the force be with you."
Kylo Ren nodded.
Maybe, it would be.
[glad you liked my story, op. It was a challenge to write, because death seemed the most merciful ending. Hopefully this one will only make you cry in a good way! If you feel like reciprocating (Anon would like to be greedy too) I've got the Kylo Ren - pro-ana post on page 30 that remains woefully unfilled...]
