Finn returns from a mission and goes to his and Poe's shared room only to stumble in on Poe having sex with a man. Finn is startled and quickly leaves. Poe goes to confront Finn about what happened and starts apologizing profusely (being all "I understand if you never want to see/talk to me again"). Poe just assumed that Finn would be homophobic due to his upbringing in the First Order (First Order most likely has homosexuality illegal and punishable by death). To his suprise, Finn isn't mad at Poe and is fine with his life-decisions. The author can decide what happens after

IDK if you care about extended canon (what are we calling it? It's EU but it's not, you know, THE EU) but in Before the Awakening, Finn doesn't really seem to notice other Stormtroopers' genders at all. It might just be Finn, but on the other hand it seems like their would be lots of advantages to the First Order if they de-emphasized the distinctions between genders- on a practical level, for efficiency's sake it's better for everyone to be able to do things like shower together, and on a broader level a distinct sense of gender identity is pretty detrimental to creating a unit with no sense of self.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I can totally buy Poe freaking out and Finn being like "gay??? what is gay??"
