Fill: After Life (1/?)
(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 03:47 am (UTC)(link)(It had belonged to him in his heart, he knew, but he'd never meant it literally.)
Dying came easy. In death there was a hell of light and the image of his father and his grandfather and other faces that he knew through legend and myth and the occasional vision. He was one of them now, returned to a plane of consciousness that overlooked action and saw only intent. And in that realm too came the shock of forgiveness.
You were never meant for this, his father said. Even as you did it, I knew.
Mother, Ben thought.
She knows. Anakin smiled. I can feel her.
I can feel her, too, he thought. And Rey. Please not Rey.
A disturbance in the Force. An awakening. It had started with a bright flash of light and then a shadow had descended.
Snoke had his sights set on her. A new apprentice more reliable and more susceptible and more powerful than the last. No, Ben thought. It felt a horrible waste of his life and potential and of a life more deserving than his.
There were ways to breech beyond the realms, to return and communicate with the living. He communed with the masters of past millennia who showed him how. In this place, time was immaterial. Years of study could pass in moments. He had meditated for a thousand years in the days that she had traveled to reach his uncle; enough time for him to understand what is was he had to do.
Rey.
In her dreams she waited for him. In her nightmares she slayed him again and again and her friend, the wayward stormtrooper, and his mother and his uncle, and sometimes he killed her. The nightmares came more often than the dreams and he could feel another presence that he knew, the odorless invisible trace of his former master.
It was strange how little time they had spent around each other and yet a bond had formed and a familiarity had hovered in the backs of their minds like they had always known each other. He had wanted to teach her but, like the old cliché, she'd been the one to teach him. A valuable and irrevocable lesson it seemed. It was time to repay the favor.
Rey, wake up.
She stirred from the pallet in her lowly hut. To her these new surroundings were a luxury. It endeared her to him, all she had lost and never knew and how the simplest act of kindness or sense of comfort could mean so much. It had to be preserved, the light inside her, and the darkness controlled, for he knew more than most how the two coexisted.
"Ben?"
He did not know why she called him by that name but he responded from his place in the shadows.
"I'm here."
"This is a dream."
"No."
"But I can't see you."
He smiled. "Some padawan you make. Don't look with your eyes. There are other ways to see."
He watched as she frowned in displeasure at the teasing in his voice. His smile grew wider and went away just as fast as she sat on the edge of the bed and closed her eyes. He could feel all that existed inside her surge and look around and beg for something, some way out, an understanding. She took deep breaths and the Force concentrated and her mouth fell open with a small, sweet gasp.
"I see you," she breathed and her eyes fluttered open.
"Hi," he said.
"Hey." She cried. "Are you real?"
"As real as you want me to be."
"Can you touch me?"
"I can try." He took a step closer. "If you'll let me."
She nodded. He crossed the short distance and hovered before her, his fingers reaching out to brush a tear that clung to her cheek. The tear did not move. Rey did not breathe but she looked at him and she laughed and cried more. It was something. It was everything. It was better than anything he had ever known during his short life and since his dying.
