I'm only saying this here because the OP asked what we're looking for, I would never actually say that on someone's fic. I'm not a psychopath, promise. But yes, it took me a long time to write my first Star Wars fic because I was on the stupid Wookieepedia for every other detail, because I thought it'd be hypocritical of me not to try my best.

The issue with this is that it is a TFA kink meme, so a lot of people are only going off the canon presented in that single movie.
This is so weird, because a good half of all the modern AU TFA fics I stumble upon ARE Coffee Shop AU. Where does this person hang out? FF.net?

I'm not sure this thread is about the kink meme, I think the OP was asking about the whole fandom.
The prompter wanted an h/c fic where Finn burst into tears over something apparently inconsequential. So the author wrote a fic where he cried because the canteen were serving mashed potato, not Tater Tots, and he didn't know if he liked mashed potato.

I really like the idea of something with login tbh. I mean, just reading through this single page of off-discussion has me thinking it would be nice to be somewhere where not everyone is anon, you know? Completely anon spaces tend to bring out more rudeness and less community.
To be fair, there are some details that aren't available. When I went looking on Wookieepedia for birth control methods, all it said was Birth control were methods or devices used to prevent pregnancy.
That doesn't give me much to work from and while I can assume that maybe there's an injection, who knows, a future universe could also have shitty birth control methods and still require pills or whatnot. Or it could be some weirdly antiquated herbal remedy to ward off pregnancy.
And then you have some details like "books and papers are rare" or "dogs and cats are rare", and while it'd be out of place to have them show up in every fic, them existing in a fic wouldn't be out of place in canon.
So, while I agree that people should at least research the canon universe, sometimes earth-based premises are the default for lack of a better, canon option.

But they also reblog every single one of those 'cute OTP AU ideas' posts, especially the ones that revolve specifically to coffee shops, so I think they just reeeeally like coffee shop AUs. bwahahahaha, I know the feeling of spending too much time on Wookieepedia. Google suggests me Poe Dameron when I type star wars wiki as the third link now.
I started using the star wars databank as well, but the wiki is more complete (there are canon species in the comics that are not in the databank).
But then there's a risk of going overboard with it. I was looking up species for a non-fill fic, and I picked one because they mostly looked cute, but I'm not going to watch the entire Clone Wars series for their cute faces.

Without the comics there wouldn't be any mcu movies, so yes, they do matter.
DA here. I've read my fair share of SW EU and I honestly don't mind people only going off of TFA-specific canon. I mean, the SW EU is intimidating as fuck to get into, even with the vast majority of it being deemed non-canon, so I'm cool with people just sticking to the movie and not wanting to mess with anything beyond that. Same with the MCU - I read comics but I'm not expecting comic-compliance when I go into movieverse fic. That said, the details provided by knowing the EU can help with world building (like knowing the names of tech or alien species) but it doesn't make-or-break a fic for me if the author doesn't know or even contradicts EU.

Yeah, honestly I'm just not a fan of the rest of the franchise. I was really surprised by how much I loved the latest movie and have been excited to write fics for it, but that's it. I google things when I'm writing, but I know I'm probably going to make mistakes that go against pieces of the canon since it's a huge canon. I don't have the time/energy/desire to care though.
The other point still stands too: watching just TFA itself and nothing else, it's still abundantly clear that they're aliens, not on earth, and don't use our days of the week. You don't have to go back and read all the novels and watch the christmas special to figure out you shouldn't make references to American brand names.
