I've been wondering the same thing, anon. A lot of fandoms I've been in suffer from the same problems. The tropes or repetitive fics have always plagued fandoms. The popular tropes from the early 2000s are different from the popular tropes now, so maybe that's part of it.

Only a few authors working with that vast an amount of potential characters automatically means fans of most teams/players are out of luck, even if they're immensely shippable. And the popularity of certain teams automatically relegates other teams to villain status (says a Flyers fan, haha).

Oooh, who's doing SW fic now? Because I always need more recs.

It does move quickly, so much so that if you want your fic to get a lot of kudos or hits, you better have something ready to post as soon the movie comes out.

Smoking in the FIrst Order (or in general... or is it General? OTL *bad pun*)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity... I've seen many people write Hux and other characters as smokers and I was just wondering why or which characters you'd perceive to be as someone who smokes? Personally, I gotta say Hux and Phasma seem like among the people least likely to smoke for me. XD Hux is so prim and proper about everything and they're leading figures and I'm guessing smoking is probably prohibited in the First Order (or at least discouraged)? Now after reading the novel Before the Awakening I can even see it less, since there's a scene where a stormtrooper's rations are cut short by Phasma because it was detected in his physicality test that he was a bit over the allowed weight / fat percentage or something like that. Everything is so strictly controlled that I can't really imagine it and while I guess he as a General could certainly allow it for himself, I just don't see Hux as the type to indulge in smoking (lol, I feel like I've spent too many thoughts on this).
BTW, now that I think about it, does anyone in the SW universe canonically smoke? I could totally picture Han or Poe doing it because uh pilot cliché or something... (and Grievous haha)
Anyway, your opinions? XD

Oh and Yoda lol. He'd be like the Gandalf of SW.

I want to see Poe smoking because Oscar Isaac looks unfairly attractive when he's smoking.

I think this would just come down to taste. Or even timing - if you happen to read two fics with similar premises in a very short space of time, suddenly that storyline feels repetitive, whereas someone else might find it fresh and different from what they've been seeing.

I had a conversation with someone the other day who was talking about how all SW fic was already boring and relying too heavily on stupid recycled tropes. When I asked what they'd want to see that would be exciting and new, their answer was more coffee shop AUs, which I find to be one of the most overused tropes in all fandom. So different strokes for different folks.

NA

People are excited by the newest iteration of Star Wars fandom, but there's still a lot of questions about the characters and their backstories, and that can make people reluctant to write fic

THIS.

Steeped in the EU as I am, it's been super frustrating trying to figure out all the little details that come quickly to me, but now I have to confirm they're still a ~thing. And I spend a LOT of time pissy about stupid things that really fuck up what I wanted to do.

Re: TFA fics versus other fandom fics

Honestly, and I say this about all my fandoms right now, less modern college/high school/coffee shop AUs and more fic set in canon. I get into sci-fi and fantasy for the new worlds that have been built, so having a majority of fic set in present day seems like an unimaginative cop out. At worst, a lot of that fic reads the same or you can swap out any fandom or character and no one would be wiser.

I mean, if you have to write a coffee shop AU, why can't it be set in canon with Finn working at a coffeeshop on some resistance-friendly planet or why can't a college AU be about Poe or Hux training at their respective academies?

I haven't really found that to be true. But if I had to guess what might be causing the feeling of repetition is the crossover from tumblr to ao3. A lot of head cannon posts with 10k+ notes get transferred over to fics.

This isn't unique to TFA though, so I'm confused. But then again people were already done with this fandom by the first page of this discussion thread, so I feel like a lot of the complainers were never really into this to begin with

I want them to have looked up how things work in the SW universe and try to genuinely imagine a fun way to work with that canon and world building. The number of times I've seen fics use clearly earth-based premises or logic or problems or even just everyday details like calling the days of the week by our names and saying "Sunday is a day for rest" makes me really frustrated, because it makes me feel like authors are not trying AT ALL.

I also want fewer soulmate AUs, but that's a pan-fandom plight.

Yeah, there's smoking in the SW universe - I've seen references to cigarros and pipes.

I hadn't thought about anyone from the First Order smoking, but I agree with the headcanon that they probably wouldn't. Smoking in SW is usually reserved for smuggler/pirate/criminal characters, or wise elderly characters with pipes. The First Order would probably discourage something that would require stormtroopers to remove their helmets to enjoy. Plus if it's as addictive in SW universe as it is in ours, that's not something they'd probably allow. I can totally see them using addictive suppliments to boost stormtrooper athletic performance, but an addictive leisurely habit is another thing. Plus I can imagine Hux would be really fussy about his uniform smelling of smoke.

An after-hours drink, on the other hand, I can totally see, at least for First Order members of a certain rank.

I think this is to be expected in fandoms where there's an extensive world already built. A lot of people are lazy or intimidated when it comes to looking up pre-established details and just assume SW is modern day earth, but in space. It's like this with other sci-fi or fantasy problems, and while it's definitely annoying and can sometimes draw me out of a fic, I do understand where it comes from.

ayrt

Sure, I understand where it's coming from, but that doesn't make it better. I don't want fics by lazy and intimidated people. I want fics by authors who have a good story to tell and passably okay writing skills.

Personally, I would like to see more action-y fic, or mission fic. Also fics exploring all the possibilities of this gigantic shared universe, planets, differing societies, non-humans and whatnot. With shippy fics, I'd like to see more slow-burn type stuff. Also long fics that deal with the main duo's backstories while acknowledging how psychologically damaged/disturbed they probably are by their ordeals. But obviously this is just my own taste in fic and I am not speaking for everyone.

Yes to the mission fic!

I read this post-TFA fic that focuses more on mission/action and I would love to see more like it in fandom: http://archiveofourown.org/works/5570728/chapters/12842296

I saw a fic that repeatedly mentioned Tater Tots. Tater Tots. Why not just include Band Aids and Twinkies and any other USA-specific brands if you're gonna do that, right? Sigh.

Yes, it's a connected series. Its based around a group of humans (scientists and military) who take the stargate to another galaxy, knowing they'll be stuck there for sometime so they can investigate the city of the ancients. There's some cameos from SG-1 actors, but it's mostly a stand alone.
