The Republic has always been a bag of corrupt and greedy wankers one step down from the Imperials. The Rebellion and the Resistance are the good guys, the Empire/First Order are the bad guys, and the Republic is the political shit pit of civil backstabbing and glad-handing that spawns both.

How valid it the stuff in that article? Because it sure sounds like they know stuff about the upcoming movie, and after all the shitstorm Carrie Fisher took in certain circles for daring to age between the OT and the ST movies, I can see her going 'you know what, fuck it. I'll be in the movies, but put me in a coma or something'

I've always wanted the First Order to be wagging their fingers at the Republic, trying to scold them and stop them from being corrupt and greedy. Obviously that is not the case, as thus far (based on VII) they are very much the villains of this trilogy.

I would love to see the FO splinter into two groups. A group led by Snoke that are villains, out to destroy and take over the galaxies. And another group that are just trying to represent a different view, to represent their people, so they can have their own equal standing alongside the Republic. Two parties, somewhat like Democrats vs Republicans, working for the greater good of the galaxies(universe) (or country).

But that will never happen. The First Order as a whole will remain villains.

Well, I suppose the Republicans haven't blown up an entire inhabited star system yet, so they do have that going for them. And I'm sure they and Grindlewald could agree on the whole greater good concept too.

That's only because one hasn't been found yet. I bet they will be blowing up big parts of the Middle East and possibly Korea, or at least trying to.

Since the meme is kinda dead lately, lets talk about something controversial to stir up interest! Rape play, pretending to rape/be raped by your partner!
If it's not tagged as roleplay beforehand, should it be tagged for rape/noncon? Should it ALWAYS be tagged as roleplay? Should it be considered dubcon, since consent, from the perspective of the reader, is dubious?

I personally think it should be tagged as though it were actual rape, for the folks who blacklist related terms and might be triggered, despite there being consent.

Ooooh, cool, shiny question. So, I have read rape role-play fics and they come in a wide variety of different flavours.

So there was this one kind of issues-fic where the protagonist of series is a survivor, though both he (and maybe the author) don’t seem to realise it :/ largely because gender-crap. He discovers that rape role-play is actually a thing that people do and it’s a revelation. He asks his partner at the time to do it with him. There is really careful negation and discussion of issues and then the whole thing is from the POV of the partner, playing the role of a rapist, who’s a bit worried and trying really hard to get it right for his partner.

Then there are fics that are written to look exactly like rape from the perspective of the reader, with no set-up, negation scene or discussion of safewords or basically anything that indicates that it’s play until, say, right at the very end. Between these extremes there are a multitude of ways to write rape role-play.

Ultimately tags serve two main purposes 1) so that people looking for a thing can find it and 2) so people not looking for a thing can avoid it. Tagging appropriately is one of like two actual duties of fandom content-creators.

I think “rape role-play” should always be tagged, but tagged as role-play. To be extra careful one can add “discussions of rape”, “TW/CW mimics violent rape”, what have you - but I think lumping in consent play with actual rape, is probably not a great idea. It kind of feels like sending the message that there’s no delineation between a controlled scenario involving kink and actual non-con. I would absolutely advise against tagging it dub-con.

I have a tiny bit of experience writing something like this for the TFA kinkmeme. It wasn’t explicitly role-play per se, but character A asks character B to fuck them up and ignore any pleas to stop. I warned for “TW - not safe, not sane, ultimately mimics violent rape, but consensual.” It was indeed all of those things. I also figured that would be enough to prevent anyone stumbling across it without warning.

I am curious to hear the thoughts of others on this matter.

There are so many movies this year coming, that I am currently seriously pondering signing up for a subscription of a movie flatrate at my loval theatre! 12 month for 270 EUR...considering how expensive tickets are nowadays, even if i only watch 2 movies a month, that subscription would already pay off...

star trek beyond does for star trek what TFA did for star wars.
not for nothing, but star trek into darkness was like, the phantom menace of all star trek movies. it wasn't even star trek- new, boring crap with damning moral goals. they turned it into another war movie with bad writing and lens flares. the icing on the metaphorical cake was abrams ripping off spock's death scene for the finale (you think jar jar is bad? they literally just reused the plot of the second movie! but i digress.) so youve got disillusioned, jaded fans, ready to resign themselves to hating whatever next installment gets churned out.
but apparently abrams just had to go from the future to long long ago, because holy shit. star trek beyond was *good*.
not perfect, granted (idris elba ilu but i dont understand your character) but it brought back that excited giddy feeling youd get the first time you watched the movies. they took what made the originals so fun and brought it back, just like in TFA. x-wings fly in formation, lightsabers battle for ood and evil. the enterprise and her crew boldly go. so: if youre a traditional trekkie, give this one a chance. and if you liked into darkness, holy crap! its everything you liked in that one with more old-school star trek in it, and thats always a good thing, eh?
(i grew up watching TOS and star wars, my dad and i would marathon them during school breaks. i just have a lot of emotions about space movies, ok?)

i agree with you that it felt like watching an extended TOS episode, and less like the summer blockbuster it could've been. kinda liked it, actually.
and yeah, jj abrams was way, way more adept with the kind of soft reboot TFA was than anything he did in star trek. y'all can keep him.

retelling? yes. homage? no way. into darkness took what was easily one of the most powerful scenes in tos and just kind of shoe-horned it to play on nostalgia for its own gain. it was this pretentious, heavy-handed, "this is a grand gesture artistic moment" that was all over the movie that personally ruined it for me. and quinto's spock doing the "KHAAAAAN" was just cringey more than anything else. shatner camp i can live with. nu!trek melodrama gets annoying.
