Cardo woke up in a confinement cell. He was perturbed at his missing helmet and gear. “Kriff.” He reached for and found his medallion missing and was upset about that.

“Cardo, get up! We have to break out of here!”

Cardo sighed, “How about you not say that in front of our jailer? Use what little brains the Maker granted you.”

He sat up slowly and the jailer in question asked, “Do you need medical?”

Cardo smiled at the young woman, “I am not seeing double and I have a relatively minor headache.”

“Cardo, why are you talking to her?”

“That would be my other larger headache.” He slumped back against the wall. “Would it be possible to have my medallion back? It has great sentimental value.”

“You think they’ll do that? We could use it to escape!”

The girl jailer looked both astonished and perturbed, then looked back at Cardo.

“I promise it is only a plain disc of metal, but I earned it the day I earned the love of my Master.” He peered around the woman, “Shut. Up. Shev.”

Leia looked up as the woman entered the security office. “I want to hear your thoughts.”

Connix sighed, “The one named Cardo is not what I expected.”

Leia studied the medallion in question, “I can see why he wants it back, It’s a traditional medal of service, it has to be earned under a specific set of circumstance, and it’s a long list I’m not going into now.” Leia thought it over, “Have Cardo brought to an interrogation room, I want to talk to him.”

Cardo got to his feet when Leia entered and bowed respectfully to her. She nodded and bid him to sit. “Tell me about Shev Ren.”

Cardo told of the uneventful capture, the orders for reconditioning, then of Dwitt’s stupid choice to turn FN-2187 into a Knight of Ren instead.

“It was clear that the First Order does not know what makes a good Knight of Ren. Vicrul and I were supposed to dangle him out to you as a prize to be captured, it was dumb luck on me being captured, I can’t imagine how Vicrul is blaming herself.”

Poe asked, “What will your master do to her for the failure?”

“Comfort her and inadvertently make her cry harder. He’s a good leader, a man I would follow through several hells, but he’s a bit awkward.” He looked at Leia who kept her face very carefully neutral.

“We are going to talk to him, I want you to be involved, your input.”

Connix asked, “Can we trust him?”

“I can.” She pulled the medallion from her pocket and handed it to him, letting him loop it over his head.

Cardo was settled in the security office with Leia and Connix. The security chief raised an objection but Leia overruled him. The security chief said nothing further verbally but he watched Cardo with suspicion.

Poe and Rey entered the cell block, both having been fitted with earbuds. Poe stepped forward and said, “Hey, we have to talk.”

Shev pointed at Rey, “She’s the Jedi girl, Master wants her, hopefully not to ‘canoodle’.”

“Sorry?” Poe asked.

“Yeah, some of the others like to try earn favors from Master by having sex with him and sleeping with him.”

Leia looked at Cardo, who shrugged, “That is one of the things the First Order was not aware of.” He was unflinching under her gaze. Leia kept the gaze steady and he finally said softly for her ears only, “We’ve been pretty steady lovers since he was a rookie knight. Any of us may find sexual comfort in his embrace.”

Poe and Rey had finally digested the rather shocking information but Shev was still continuing on, “Yeah the young pretty one, Trudgen, she offered her body to him if he would let her kill me!”

Cardo shrugged, “Shev was on Trudgen’s last nerve, she’s very – giving – and that was appalling to Shev who was programmed to be very prudish and uptight, which Kylo believes runs contrary to his nature, no, he never said how he knew that.”

Poe and Rey glanced at each other, but Shev was on a roll, “And Cardo? Every time you turn around he’s got his hands on Master, crawling out of Master’s bed in the morning…”

“Kylo is not a morning person.” Cardo muttered.

Leia snorted in agreement.

“And you never…?” Poe asked with a shake of his head and an open gesture of his hands.

“No! Never he…” Shev paused, “He stabbed me with his lightsaber, here,” he touched his shoulder, “And on my back.” He stiffened, “I don’t know what I did to anger him.”

Rey touched her shoulder, “You cut him here, with a lightsaber.”

“No! Never! I would never strike Master Kylo with a lightsaber!”

“I saw it.” Rey said quietly, “I was still stunned from being thrown against a tree, but I saw it, heard your scream, the red and blue lights of the sabers.”

Shev shook his head and paced the cell.

“Ask him about the good death that earned him a place in our ranks.” Cardo said.

Poe seemed reluctant and Leia muted the system and looked at him, “Good death?”

“Someone you killed, that serves the justice or nobility of the universe in a way outside standard morality. I for instance murdered the ‘pillar of the community’ who decided raping both my wife and daughter to death was a fun activity that he would not have to pay for.” He had clenched his fists while reliving that night. Leia reached out and covered his clenched fists with her hand. He looked at her dainty but strong hand.

She unmuted the system, “Ask him Commander Dameron.”

Poe and Rey traded looks and he turned to Shev, “Tell me about the good death.”

Shev looked at Poe like he was speaking Shyriiwook. “What death?” He began pacing the cell again, “I mean I haven’t flat out murdered anyone like Cardo did.”

“You seem really cross with him.” Rey said.

“He struts around, whoring himself, then …” he broke off. “Saying I’m not using my potential, saying I’m not reaching out to the Shadow. Says if I only listen I can hear the tree singing…”

Poe sucked in a breath and Rey looked confused. “Poe?”

Poe cleared his throat, “Who told you about the tree?”

Cardo looked at Leia, “You’ve seen the tree in person?”

“Not since it was a cutting, nearly twenty-five years ago. Are all of you Force sensitive?”

“Another requirement of membership that the First Order was apparently unaware of. And yes, Commander Poe, Shev is Force sensitive too.” Cardo looked at Leia, “Kylo dreams of that tree sometimes. It’s beauty haunts him.”

They broke to have dinner and let everyone have a bit of a rest.

“So, your highness, what have you done lately to make the Hutts angry?”

Leia sighed as she lifted a forkful and said most casually, “We had a minor clash with Gordo the Hutt, and he decided to take it personally.” Leia looked at Poe, “Didn’t we, Commander?”

Poe looked embarrassed, “I can’t blame the guy with amnesia can I?”

“You can, but it would be tactless.” Leia said.

Poe told the tale of how he, Finn, and Rey had been bargaining for some needed supplies, but ran up against Gordo’s agents. How it took Rey going after the most vicious of the agents with her lightsaber for them to get away.

“So the First Order never heard about that?”

“Didn’t hear or didn’t report it.” Cardo said, mopping up the gravy with his bread. “The only thing that came to Kylo’s mind was her highness strangling Jabba the Hutt with a slave chain.”

Leia sighed and shook her head as Poe and Rey looked utterly confused. Leia looked at Cardo, “Which version did you hear?”

“It felt like a compiled version, he admitted he had heard several different versions, all of which only agreed on the detail of your wardrobe…”

Leia held up a hand, then launched into the tale of rescuing Han Solo from the gangster Jabba the Hutt.

Over the next few days cracks began to appear in the conditioning. As Kylo had suspected, a shaky and poorly done job, full of tenuous and incorrect information.

Cardo was required to stay in custody, but they did grant him the request of being held away from Shev who was now reacting with venom every time he saw him, a good sign that Finn was trying to set himself straight.

Leia came to see Cardo one evening and handed him an envelope sealed with a wax seal. “I applaud you on finding wax.” he said impressed.

“Oddly the hardest part.”

Cardo studied the envelope Leia had given him. “You seem so certain I’m going to escape.”

“You are devoted to him, that is clear. He would not have given you that medallion if he was not equally devoted to you. You and your fellow knights are the light in my son’s life, as long as there’s a spark, I can have hope.”

“A band of murderous thugs are the light in your son’s life?”

“I’m taking the rough with the smooth.” Leia said sagely, “Try not to kill anyone when you make your escape.”

No one had lived in the house in years, its only current inhabitants were the wind and the shrews living in the corners. Cardo walked through the house and stood in the doorway of his daughter’s room, gathering the Shadow around him as a comfort before entering the room.

The window had been broken since that night, but the walls…

He held back a sob as he realized the vines on the wall almost followed the ones she had painted, the living ones finally reaching heights her diminutive height could not reach without help.

He whirled, then relaxed when he saw it was Kylo. “Master.”

Kylo nodded and Cardo walked over and let himself be embraced. He let Kylo lead him from the house and they entered the ship. He was almost knocked over by an enthusiastic Vicrul and Cardo spent a few minutes comforting the still distraught woman, reassuring her that he was okay, no he really was okay, he had not been tortured, yes they had fed him.

Kylo waited until most of the knights were asleep before reading the letter his mother had written to him. He sat and let quiet tears run down his face.

He looked up as Ushar made themself comfortable next to Kylo in the cushioned chair. They made an almost subvocal purring noise as they rested against Kylo, who ran his hand down a line of scales that he knew made Ushar happy. Kylo tucked the letter away in his pocket and let Ushar’s strange purring lull him to sleep.
