According to Snoke and First Order higher ups there were several things wrong with Starkiller.

It didn't destroy the Resistance.
It was destroyed.
Hux should've gone down with his weapon.
It's a disgrace to what General Hux was meant to live up to.

The solution is for Hux to convince the Resistance that he has defected to their side, work with them to show his intention and to ensure they keep him for his Intel.

In reality he is the FO new weapon. His body passes all safety checks but somehow he has been infected with undetectable chemicals that are harmless until they're activated at his choice. (Probably a specific food, or medication that only he knows)

Hux wants to redeem himself, is ready for the sacrifice.

Until he realizes he can't.
