Rey is the Empress of a flourishing but politically isolated cluster of formerly disparate nations united for their mutual safety, having taken the throne at a young age after her great-uncle died without heirs.

Finn is the commander of the army that has come to conquer them.

Rey rides out to meet the army herself, hoping to parlay with Finn and prevent a bloody war. They quickly feel a deep attraction, despite being horrified they are betraying their cause.

I totally don't mind tragic endings.

I'm thinking about writing something for this. TBH this is such a cool and complex prompt that this deserves at least a 100k+ words long fill which I sadly don't have the strength to write but right now I really want to do something with this, I hope I won't lose the sudden inspiration :/

Two questions for OP before I (hopefully) start to write anything:

1. Is Rey's great-uncle mentioned in the prompt a specific character from the SW canon?

2. Would Finn's army be sent by the First Order or the Resistance (I mean the equivalent of them in this setting)? I suppose the FO would make more sense (conquering, bloody war, Finn betraying them, etc.), and in that case the characters who were in the movie part of the Resistance could be members of the nations of Rey's Empire, but I thought I would ask to make sure! Also, if Finn is sent by the FO, would you be okay with some background Kylux added or is that an absolute no for you?

Awesome!!! Even if you just write a tiny snapshot ficlet in lieu of 100K epic I will be so happy!! To answer your questions:

1. Nope, I wasn't thinking of anyone specific. Could be Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, Bail Organa, Padme (Oooh, that could complicate the FO's involvement if Kylo believes he's the true heir...when, now I'm getting myself excited), an OC, anyone, doesn't even have to be a great-uncle in the end. I only put great-uncle because canonically Rey has this huge destiny unexpectedly thrust on her, so I imagined it would be appropriate if this orphaned nobody unexpectedly inherited a throne because of a number of untimely deaths on her estranged parent's side of the family.

2a. I was definitely imagining the FO or some equivalent - it could even be the actual FO if you wanted to set this in the canon universe and have Rey's empire be an isolated star system with some semi-scifi, semi-medieval elements to it (in which case the Resistance characters could be AU versions of themselves OR the canon versions who happen to be visiting/allied with Rey's people). Having the Resistance characters as representatives of different nations under Rey, if I'm reading you right, sounds great!!! Leia as a queen who advises Rey on military matters? Jessica Pava as a knight in Rey's army? Or even the Resistance as a nomadic people from the wintry North who were never incorporated by Rey's Empire but will still come to her aid against the First Order? Whatever works best for you!

2b. Background Kylux is fine. I'm pretty easy about background pairings, even involving Finn and Rey, as long as Finn/Rey is the main romance and/or end goal.
