(frozen comment) Re: Gen, Neurodivergent Ben Easy Target for Snoke, cw abuse, ableism
(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 06:23 am (UTC)(link)If you're diagnosed and your parents actually believe the diagnosis, certainly :( I was diagnosed with one neuro disorder when I was ten and my dad wouldn't let me get treatment because he didn't believe that his kid could possibly be "crazy," and I wasn't diagnosed with another disorder that impacts my life far more until I was almost eighteen--up until then my parents seemed to think that I was "difficult" and "way too sensitive" on purpose. They still don't seem to understand that it's something that actually impacts the way I interact with people and with the entire world, not just some abstract thing I can put down on a form so I can get (very minor) disability benefits. And the thing is that my parents are not horrible, they just absolutely don't understand what it's like to not be neurotypical. I can definitely see Han and Leia utterly failing to understand why Ben is acting so strangely and trying all kinds of things to "correct" the kid without having any idea that he needs a different kind of help, especially since psychological medicine in the Star Wars universe seems to be pretty nil.
