Re: Hux, Kylo, rest of cast; Gen or Kylux, Western AU - FILL: Chain Lightning (4/?)
(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 05:16 am (UTC)(link)“Don’t worry,” he says, to the frightened eyes of the expressman, trussed in the corner, face bleeding. “It’s safe. I hope you weren’t too badly injured.”
The man shakes his head. “I’ll survive,” he says. “You are a hero, truly.”
Hux steps nearer. He wishes there were a more civilized way of doing this but since “Kylo Ren” took his derringer from his boot there is only this one way, ugly and personal. “Not true,” he says.
He strikes the man before he can see what’s coming. His head goes limp. Hux feels his throat for a pulse. Keeps pressing until there isn’t one any longer.
Perhaps it didn’t hurt.
Then he reaches into his pocket and removes the receipt.
--
It is easy to find lodgings in Jakku with $20,000. It would have been easy with much less.
Jakku is a small mining town. A saloon and a swanky hotel dominate the main street; a little ways down is the brothel, the telegraph office, and a newspaper office.
Hux finds rooms in a boarding house (run by a diminutive, bespectacled old widow, Mrs. Kanata), buries some of the money and conceals the rest behind a loose floorboard, and sets about determining how best to invest it.
Hux is crossing the street from the boarding house towards the saloon when he runs across his companion from the train. She is walking in a determined manner towards the sheriff’s office.
“Morning, Miss Rey,” he calls, doffing his hat. “Or is it –Mrs.?”
She shakes her head. “I’m afraid something awful has happened,” she says. “I made it to the farm but he was gone. They said the fever took him a day before I arrived.” Her manner is still cheerful but he can tell that she is under a considerable strain.
“What will you do?”
“The trouble of it is,” Rey says – he notices now that she has been clutching a piece of paper in a tight grip the entire time – “before I’d even gotten there, he left everything to me.”
“Is his family going to contest the will?”
“His family didn’t know I existed,” Rey says. “So you see my difficulty.” He escorts her to the door of the sheriff’s office and lets her walk in on her own.
On his way back down the street he runs into Finn, the man who owns the saloon. Hux is fairly certain from his bearing that he served in the war; he came out west to prospect, struck it rich, and the rest was history. Hux had made the mistake of trying to ask about the circumstances of his military service and he had replied with a rueful joke about “contraband” that was clearly designed to shut the conversation down, and everyone on the other barstools had stiffened and cleared their throats, so Hux had not pursued the subject. He is evidently extremely well liked.
“You were on her train,” Finn says. “The one that got robbed.”
Hux nods. “Poor Rey,” he offers.
“She can handle herself,” Finn says, “but I don’t know how she’ll manage his family.”
“Who are they?”
“Sister’s a rancher,” Finn explains. “She’s all right. No nonsense. But his nephew’s trouble. Writes bad verse. Keeps bad company. Thinks everything belongs to him. Soon as they hear he’s gone they’ll be raring to go.”
“Mm.” Hux makes a face that he hopes conveys sympathy.
“Come have a drink,” Finn suggests. “Any friend of Rey’s—”
Hux follows him back down the street and into the saloon.
“Usual?” Finn asks, stepping briskly behind the bar.
“Didn’t realize I already had a usual.” Hux takes it. “Quite an eventful place, this town of yours.”
“I haven’t had the pleasure,” says an unfamiliar female voice at the end of the bar. Hux glances over. It is clear from her attire – or lack thereof – that this woman works in a brothel. She has a commanding air, blonde hair, and eyelashes that cannot be natural. She is easily his height, which is rare.
Hux briefly ponders lying and then doesn’t. “Hux.”
“Last name or given name?”
“The one I like to be called,” Hux says.
“Mm,” she says. “Phasma. You ought to visit my establishment.”
“The church?” Hux asks.
She purses her lips. “I hear you were on the train that got robbed.”
“They stole my gun,” Hux says.
“That’s a shame,” Phasma says. “Pity to see a man without a gun.”
Finn rolls his eyes so loudly it’s practically audible. “Phasma,” he says. “Honestly.”
Phasma ignores the rebuke. “He’ll be in town tonight,” she says.
“Who?” Hux asks.
“He will not,” Finn says.
“I have it on good authority.”
“One of your fine ladies?”
“I don’t reveal my sources.”
“Who?” Hux asks again.
“Mr. Poe Dameron,” Phasma says.
“The most famous gambler in the Outer Rim territories,” Finn says. “He’ll wager on anything and he always wins. He’s gambled on riverboats.”
“And bet on riverboats.”
“Yes, that was what I meant,” Finn says. “He’s gambled on crickets.”
“I’m confused,” Hux says, “does he ride the cricket?”
“He gambles everywhere,” Phasma translates, “and he’ll bet on anything.” She turns to Finn. “And he’s nowhere near so good as you make him out to be. You’re just lousy at cards in general so you find him impressive.”
“How about you?” Finn asks. “Do you play?”
“I prefer games of skill,” Hux says.
“We have plenty of those,” Phasma says.
“When does he get here?” Finn asks.
“When does who get here?” asks another voice, and when Hux looks up at the swinging doors there is an extremely striking man with dark hair, faint stubble, and a golden watch chain. He doffs his hat (expensive, grey, like his suit). He is wearing a gaudy orange vest.
“Why, Mr. Poe Dameron,” Phasma says, nodding. He approaches and she permits him to kiss her hand, giggling.
“Miss Phasma.”
Behind the bar, Finn is suddenly very busy with the glasses.
“Buddy!” Poe exclaims. “Is that my favorite barkeep in the Outer Rim Territories?”
“Hello, Poe,” Finn says.
“My horse says hello,” Poe says.
“BB talks now?” Finn asks, grinning, daring to look up.
“Well, actually, neigh, she says neigh,” Poe concedes, “but I could tell she was pining for you. You’ll have to come say hello.”
“Or neigh,” Finn says. He pours a glass. “On the house.”
“You have to stop giving out free drinks,” Phasma murmurs.
“All right,” Poe says, “to friends, old and new!” He extends a hand towards Hux. “I’m Poe. Poe Dameron.”
“Hux.”
Poe claps him on the back. “Now,” he says, “what is there here that we can bet on?”

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 05:38 am (UTC)(link)I was wondering who the mystery husband was going to be, poor Luke, but getting Rey mixed up in inheritance drama is genius! Hah, is there going to be an actual Skywalker Ranch? I'm cackling about Ben being known for his bad verse.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)Aaaahhh, I was away for a week and now I came back to find this amazing fill o(≧∇≦o)
It's such perfect worldbuilding. I adore everyone's characterisation and their roles. Hux is a delight, all snark and cunning; Rey is perfectly lovely; Kylo is a perfect train wreck; Phasma is awesome and Finn is downright adorable. And then there's Poe!
I can't wait to see where this is going - thank you so very much!
