Kylux, genre savvy Hux refuses to be prince charming
(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 01:34 am (UTC)(link)General Hux is genre savvy and has been working to avoid his archetype for his entire life. He's not going to be a prince, not going to be someone's hero, he's going to be a Big Damn Villain. People burst into coordinated dance routines around him? Fine, he'll use that to make synchronized regimental marches. A dying sun shines brighter when he steps outside? More fuel for the Starkiller. Everyone stops to listen whenever it seems like a thematically important musical number is coming? Alright, great, he loves having rapt audience for his propoganda. If the few occasional bars of song slip through, whatever. Any potential quirky sidekicks that crop up are ruthlessly reprogrammed (looking at you, FN-2187). He's got this under control.
Then Kylo Ren shows up.
+++ This is why Kylo feels the draw of the Light more keenly onboard the Finalizer.
+ The Force ships it
+ Mostly not indulging kick the dog moments (ie, trying to blow up the Ileenium system, oops.)
+ Hux's ongoing battle with nature, featuring his horrible pollen and fur allergies
+ trope dense Kylo
+ Cynical exploitation. Like breaking into song to enable escape or using Mitaka as a morality smokescreen
+ Hux truly believes in The Cause, and knows that villains do all the dirty work. "Good" is inefficient. His way is faster.
+ Vicious shutdowns of romantic moments
+ Kylo keeps being Damsel-in-Distressed for Hux to rescue and they are both sick of it.
++++++++++ No redemption
