General Hux is deaf. Up to you how it happened maybe he was born deaf or maybe something happened to him as a child. Either way the Commandant couldn't be seen having a child with such a weakness. Luckily Hux was able to get implants as a child. He rarely thinks about the fact that he can't hear without them. Of course then they get damaged, maybe on a mission gone wrong or when Hux is captured or maybe they just short out on the bridge. Cue Hux trying to hide it and Kylo who was previously unaware realizing Hux is still the same badass and nothing has changed.

But imagine Ren finding out, and trying to learn sign language, only to learn the wrong kind. This is a legit thing even here on Earth with English (ASL vs BSL), so imagine how many kinds of sign language there would be in space, all from different planets and even made for different alien hands..!
(I'm sorry, I have deaf family members, so this is a Big Deal for me!)

my little brother is deaf, and since hes such a huge fan of star wars we've created our own sign for the movies: it's the move for knight (drawing your sword) finishing in the "J" letter to stand for jedi. im sorry probably tmi but im just so excited by sign language in my fandoms aaa :D

That is super cute! I always wondered what kind of short hand gets developed for stuff like this, because I sure as hell wouldn't have the patience to spell out C-O-R-U-S-C-A-N-T or whatever every time I wanted to nerd out.
