Poe Dameron had been plucking his mother's beat up guitar ever since he was big enough to hold it, and he's a pretty decent singer so far as he can tell from all the girls he catches staring when he breaks the guitar out during a free block.

Rey is the new kid from Jakku, Texas. A graceful dancer but she really shines in mechanic class, even crotchety Mr Solo seems to like her. Poe convinces her to try her hand at drums and finds that she can hit those skins savagely and with perfect time. She agrees that Poe has a great singing voice, especially when he throws in spanish lyrics.

Finn is the transfer from a boarding school that went belly up. He played double bass in band and an idle offer from Poe has him learning electric bass pretty fast over lunch hours. He's totaly not using bass practice as an excuse to stare at Poe or brush fingers with him oh noooo.

Finn joins Poe and Rey and they decide to take a run at the local venue that's currently under the thumb of a hardcore duo; a towering drummer with a deep growl for a singing voice and a wiry ginger who can shred an axe like he's tearing a man's face off. If only they'd quit taking shots at eachother's playing between songs and Ben would stop breaking his drumsticks every other song.

This makes me miss my own garage band days, so seconded!

I can see so many possibilities in this au;
- Rey and Ben having a drum competition between the two band's sets
- Finn not feeling punk rock enough so Poe lends him his patched up and painted leather jacket, later deciding that Finn should keep it ("oh no I totally drown in it, it fits you way better since you can, uh, fill it out better.. buddy,")
- Poe is totally a Mic Jagger frontman and he prances around and crowdsurfs when he can
- Rey standing up at her drums mid set to give Finn a smooch, crowd goes wild.
- Finn and Poe wailing on their guitars facing eachother and leaning right into eachother's face, some meathead fan of Ben's band tells them to "kiss already you f*gs!", the trio all give a one finger salute and Finn and Poe kiss, the crowd loses its collective shit.

dude I've got more where that came from
- After agreeing to help Mr. Solo with his difficult old van (it looks like it barely got out of the 80's in one piece, the faded airbrushing on the side advertises a long forgotten band called The Millennium Falcons), Rey lands a deal where the trio can practice in his garage.
- "You need a drum teacher," Hisses Ben, tapping his drumsticks in over-complicated patterns on any and every flat surface he can reach.
-Solo's old rocker pal Chewie (a very tall, very hirsute dude with a full beard and metalhead hair) couch surfs at his house for a bit, hears Rey struggling with the drumset and wanders over and asks her if she needs help in the deepest bass growl, Rey nearly flips her drums she's so startled.
- Poe writes entire diss songs in Spanish.
- quickies in dubious graffitied venue washrooms, both bands do it.
- Jar-Jar and the Binks, E.W.O.K. (Eternally Withstanding Overlord Knukleheads), It's A Trap!, and other simply fantastic opening bands
- the trio starts playing one of their most well known songs, crafty Hux disconnects poe's mic right before he can start singing, Finn quickly covers for Poe and ends up singing the song better then Poe did. Poe is fuming but at the same time hearteyes.
