---
Finn loved the feeling of Poe snugged to his back; the lazy arm over his wast, the warm press of hairy chest against his sabre scar, the swell of Poe's chest as he breathed in, and the soft whistle that slipped between his teeth as he breathed out. It broke his heart to leave.
Carefully Finn slipped out from under Poe's arm and tugged on a pair of sweatpants. Once they were on he tiptoed across the bunkroom floor on bare feet, pausing to pull on some shoes and his jacket, split up the back seamlessly repaired by a tailor that owed Poe a considerable favour.
"F'nn?" the pilot's voice was low and thick with sleep, a confused grunt passing for Finn's name. A glance over his shoulder picked out the rebel in murky shadows; sitting up in their shared bed with the covers clutched against his naked chest.
"I'm fine Poe, my brain just isn't tired yet, I'm going to take a walk," half truth, then with a comforting smile, "Go back to sleep babe, I'll be back before you know it," Poe nodded gently, clawing a hand through wild bedhead curls before falling back on the mattress and turning over.
He slipped out of the room, checking both ways for patrols before setting off for the nearest exit. A couple moments later, Poe followed him. Being a spy had taught him many things, one, how to sleep lightly, and two, how to fake a sleeper's voice.
He ghosted along behind the other man, always out of sight of Finn who rounded corners faster and faster, racing towards the exit like his life depended on it. Poe did his best to keep up, he could only go so fast in boots without making a sound on the tiles.
Finn on the other hand was as giddy as can be, feeling the darkness and the moonlight sing to him from outside. he let his feet carry him faster, wishing he could fold down into his other form and bolt off right this instant. He pushed through a door and stepped into the night, drawing a deep breath of lush air that made his hair stand on end and teeth sharpen to points against his tongue.
Patience, patience, soon enough you'll be free. He had to remind himself that he was still to close to the base, too close to the kind of people who would shoot him down as soon as they saw blue teeth and black fur.
Poe was close behind, smirking as he rounded the last corner and got a whiff of cool night air. That way. He pushed through the door too and closed it carefully behind him, head on swivel for Finn. A breeze passed over him and he shivered; perhaps something more then a pair of sweatpants and boots would of been a better choice, but it was too late now to go back.
"Gotcha," Poe spotted the ex-trooper at the treeline, jacket clenched in one hand and scarred back bare in the night. The pilot dropped flat on the ground as Finn turned, careful not to move, not to breathe, lest he be spotted. Finn didn't see him, he turned back and walked into the trees.
"One parsec, two parsec," Poe counted, timing himself. If he moved too fast, Finn may see him through the trees, too slow and he would loose him in the forest. "three parsec, four parsec-"
A bloodcurdling screech stopped Poe cold. He was up in a moment and off into the trees like a shot.
"Finn!" He shouted into the forest, his own voice swallowed up by the leaves and the breeze that whispered through them. "Finn!!" He hopped over tree roots, stumbling for purchase on the moss, cool night air chilling the sweat on his skin. He looked all about, squinting into the shadows for familiar shapes and finding none.
The screech came again, closer this time. The pilot pressed himself to a tree trunk, sinking down and folding his knees up to make himself a smaller target. His hands scrabbled for a weapon, a branch or a rock or something, anything, to defend himself with. Fingers brushed skin and Poe gasped, holding his breath and praying whatever he touched wasn't the same that that has been shrieking. No response, not even a breath. Curious fingers reached out again, brushing the sin and finding it to be leather, warm leather.
It was his pilot jacket, Finn's pilot jacket. Quickly he put it on to shield against the night's chill. Why did Finn leave it here? He took it practically everywhere it just made no sense to leave it. He froze again, listening, waiting, then hearing nothing he stood once more.
"Finn?" he didn't shout for fear of attracting whatever was making that terrifying noise. Finn must be close, the jacket wouldn't still be this warm if he wasn't. "buddy where are you? I'm getting worried,"
A twig snapped behind him, Poe whirled around.
A hulking black beast pawed the ground in front of him, glowing blue teeth dripping with saliva. It grunted at Poe, snorting in his direction before slowly picking it's way towards him. Poe didn't move, frozen in place with fear as the creature walked right up to him, blunt head nudging against him and thin lips sneering over its shining fangs.
"Good boy," Poe mumbled, "gooooood boy or whatever you are," The beast gave a low rumble, pressing its side against Poe's thighs and twisting it's head up like a dog waiting for pets. It gnashed it's teeth and gave a trill, prompting Poe.
"Okay, okay," The pilot could feel his heart in his throat, at any moment this thing would turn on him and rip him to shreds, but still he brought a hand up and gently combed it through the animal's fur. His hand disappeared in the black, as if he had reached into a black hole. He brushed his fingers along its back, over the hump of its shoulders and down. Through the fur he felt a raised ridge, a heavy scar from some battle.
"You're a fighter huh?" A trill, "What from?" Not expecting a real reply, Poe's brain stuttered when the beast made a humming noise akin to a lightsaber. Pieces fell into place, Poe's hand left the beast's back.
"Finn I swear to the stars above," Poe stepped away from the creature, head turning left and right to catch sight of his buddy hiding in the trees, "Whatever game you're pulling here you better cut it out," The beast gave a mournful noise, then a sigh. It padded a few steps away then turned. As it turned it stood, shoulders sinking down and teeth retreating back. Claws became broad palms and fingers, arched hind legs reshaped to strong thighs and calves.
Fur flattened into dark brown skin and predator fangs shrunk to neat rows in a grinning mouth.
"Hey Poe," Smirked Finn, blue light fading from his teeth as he spoke.
"Kriffing hell," Replied Poe.
