FILL: Without Prejudice [Hux +/ Kylo - idk which yet] 1/?

I started writing this when I should have been very much asleep.

-----

Since the destruction of Starkiller Base, Kylo Ren had been acting strangely around General Hux. It was barely perceptible, and no one around them appeared to notice it. However, Hux had over the years become something of an expert in reading people in full-body uniforms and armor. Perhaps, as much as it pained him to acknowledge, he had applied that second-nature-like skill to the leader of the Knights of Ren as well. What was even more distressing to Hux was the very real possibility that he was one of the only people in the galaxy who could read Ren's body language with ease.

He didn't have time to dwell on it, of course. He didn't even have time to think about the fact that he was somehow still alive and still a commanding general. The Supreme Leader was quick to enact a new plan after the devastating loss of his superweapon--so quick, in fact, that Hux had briefly wondered if Snoke knew the tactical advantage of Starkiller would not last long.

Again, Hux had no time to wonder. He had already lost time after retrieving Ren and retreating to a little-known First Order safe zone. Ren was back on his feet but still recovering. He had resumed physical training as a form of physical therapy, and he appeared frustrated with his progress.

Frustrated, but not violent.

It took Hux a week to realize that he had not received a single incident report about Ren since he had left intensive care--no, since he had been injured. Two broken objects, one of which had dropped from unsteady hands and the other had been reshaped as some sort of mental exercise, were the only casualties. His recovery room was perfectly intact. He hadn't threatened any of Hux's officers or medical personnel. His words were of course still blunt and angry. He had always been short and to the point with most in the First Order, having no reason to discuss anything with those of a lower rank than captain. Now, he hardly said anything more complex than monosyllabic words to anyone if he could help it.

Only to Hux had Ren used longer words like, "Understood," or "General," and he never uttered them together with the same breath.

Finally, Hux gained some insight into Ren's behavior when the last of his bandages were removed. Hux had listened intently to the medical report clearing Ren as he studied the man's form with a critical eye at the same time. The biggest scars were ugly, but not as terrible as he had expected. Ren was not quick to dress, sitting on the edge of an infirmary bed clad only in boxer shorts, despite his chill-prickled skin. When Hux had stepped around in front of him again, Ren met his gaze.

"General?"

Hux blinked. Then frowned.

"You do not need my permission, Ren."

Ren nodded, a pale hand picking up the clean pair of black trousers from the neatly folded stack of clothing next to him.

Hux stepped away for a minute to continue discussing Ren's condition with a doctor, half-turned away in some semblance of granting the man a little privacy. Ren was fastening his boots when he returned. He hadn't donned his tunic or robe yet, only wearing a long-sleeved undershirt. It was one of his, but it fit a little loosely on him now.

"May I... ask you something?" Ren didn't look up from his task, slowly finishing one boot and starting the other. "Did you get hurt, too? At the base?"

Hux took his time to answer, studying Ren. He settled for the truth. "Yes."

Ren said nothing. His fingers paused their motions.

"It was minor," Hux continued, uncomfortable with the silence. "It has since healed."

Unpausing, Ren finished with his second boot, but he didn't stand. He finally tilted his face back up toward Hux.

"I saw it. On your back. It wasn't 'minor,'" he said. Although his voice was neutral, his gaze darted around Hux's face.

Hux's jaw clenched. If Ren was looking for a reaction, then he might as well give him one that left nothing to confusion.

"What have I repeatedly told you about--"

"--I didn't," he cut in, and then added in a softer tone, "I don't." Ren's eyes locked with Hux's with sudden newfound steadiness as he repeated, "I saw it."

"When?" Hux asked. Before Ren could reply, though, his brows unknitted and he slowly supplied the answer to himself. "When I had my bandages removed." He had returned to have it done by a doctor as advised, and he hadn't refused because it was difficult to reach and difficult to see on his own. Ren had been sleeping on a nearby bed at the time--or so everyone present had thought. Hux pursed his lips as he reemerged from his memory of that day. He kept his voice quiet and his tone flat. "What exactly did you see?"

For the first time that Hux could remember, Ren seemed reluctant, perhaps even a hint apologetic, to reveal to Hux what he knew.

"A large," Ren searched for an innocuous word, "area. Of scar tissue. Like from a fire."

Hux exhaled slowly through his nose. It was just as he suspected.

"That... wasn't from the base." Ren was partly right: it was a burn scar, but not from fire. "The wound from the base was..." Hux trailed off, suddenly not in the mood to give further details--or draw comparisons.

"...An accident?"

That wasn't at all where Hux was going with his fragmented sentence. Ren must have seen Hux begin to raise a hand to vaguely motion at the small mark hidden under his uniform--surely he had--and now that hand hovered pointlessly in the air. Hux couldn't quite smother the anxiety that swelled within him, at both the truth in the words and at Ren's unnervingly perceptive use of them.

"General?" Ren slowly reached out, extending his arm. "Hux?"

When Ren's long pale fingers brushed the black leather of Hux's glove, Hux was shocked back to his senses. He dropped his hand to his side and willed himself not to take a step backward.
