Well, it was only a matter of time.

Galactic Republic U is a huge prestigious public university that is slowly losing its funding to the administration, sports programs, and state budget crisis. The Resistance department is fairly high profile in part because of Professor Leia Organa who pretty much revolutionized her field and now basically just spends her time rolling into conferences and telling people how it is. She scares the living shit out of anyone who doesn't know her. All of her grad students get jobs.

Her husband, Han Solo, is significantly less accomplished, but hey, he got that spousal appointment back in the days when GRU still had money for spousal appointments in the humanities. He's a beloved figure in the department and hosts the Friday happy hours.

Poe is Professor Organa’s student, just getting to the point where his dissertation makes him sweat. He likes teaching better than research, but he would never tell her that. He enjoys mentoring Finn, who is a postbacc student with an undergrad degree in chemical engineering. Finn decided to go into Resistance Studies in his last year of undergrad and came to GRU specifically to work with Leia in hopes that she will get him into their grad program. No matter how many times Poe reassures him that Leia loves him and will definitely get him in, Finn insists on working his ass off.

Rey is a first year in the department and an absolute prodigy. She's pals with Han, who regularly gets her into social situations for networking while pretending that he just wants to hang with her. She looks up to Professor Organa enormously and quietly spends a lot of time trying to set up her career to follow Organa's trajectory.

Down the road is the University of the First Order, a huge prestigious private university with more money than it knows what to do with. Professor Snoke, Organa's intellectual rival, runs the department, steadfastly refusing to let anyone else be chair. That's fine; no one wants to be department chair anyway. No one ever has.

Hux is the student in the department with the best language skills --because he’s been studying them since he was in middle school-- who does fiendishly meticulous work. He is incredibly hard-working and has earned every accolade he's ever gotten. He's the student who will sneeringly tell you that all of the other grad students in the department are just literary theorists.

His opposite number is Kylo Ren, Snoke’s protégée, who still hasn't finished his master's degree, even though he's in his third year. He does no work for months on end and then goes on a bender, not leaving the library for 72 hours before turning in a new draft of his thesis. Hux hates him with a burning passion, and they do not see eye to eye on any issue in the field or outside it. The only thing they can agree on is that they will kill Phasma if she ever tells anyone about the time they drunkenly hooked up behind the campus bar. Strangely, this seems to have considerably relaxed the tension between them.

Oh man, sign me the fuck up for this. I am so weak for University AUs and this outline is already better than the two college fics I've read today.

If I weren't desperately trying to finish my master's thesis, I'd try to oblige. I can only hope someone writes us the university AU we deserve.
