I don't know if you know this, but gypped is a slur. Don't want to start wank, just FYI.

DA

Gyp in the meanings “to swindle” or “a person who swindles” is sometimes perceived as insulting to or by Gypsies, since it stereotypes them as swindlers. However, gyp has apparently never been used as a deliberate ethnic slur, and many people are unaware that it is derived from Gypsy.

Most people don't go around using the term to mean it as a slur. It's another one of those words that the meaning has changed over time. Kind of like "Gay" or "Queer". One meant Happy, the other meant strange or a little weird/off. Now a days they have a completely different meaning but can be used either way.

I suppose I was just surprised that anyone would be worried about wank over the term. And this is not me trying to stir up trouble, this is an honest wondering, because I do say 'gypped' from time to time and honestly am curious if it's as offensive now as it might have been ages ago.

It's perpetuating a negative stereotype. It used to be common to use the word 'jew' to mean you feel ripped of in a deal, but that's fallen out of common use, and that was perpetuating a negative stereotype too.

However, the prompt post isn't the place for off-topic discussion. I'd suggest taking this to the discussion post linked at the top of the page.
