Hux and his father aren't close for two reasons. First, because Hux Sr. mellowed out quite a bit in his old age and left the First Order. Second, because he's a massive fucking troll who never misses an opportunity to take his son down a few pegs.

When Hux Sr befriended General Leia Organa, the leader of the enemy’s forces, it was an embarrassment.

When he announced that the two of them were engaged to be married, and even worse- that he expected Hux to be nice to his new step-brother Kylo Ren, it was a disaster.

(Or, Leia and Hux Sr are both epic trolls who start pretend-dating in order to force their kids to get along. Because they're the only ones who realize how much Hux and Kylo would like each other if they'd just stop bickering for five minutes.)
