Re: Kylo, Ben and Matt - triplets AU, visiting the family, Crack 3/?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
A/N: Gah, I was struggling to get through this chapter because tbh I've written the basic outline and a lot of the fun parts already so this seems like a bit of filler to get from point A to B. But future chapters will be less barebones, I hope.

The screen door opened with an ear-piercing creak. But Ben’s noisy entrance was drowned out by an even more raucous commotion taking place in the kitchen.

Two figures were standing by the counter. The clacking of knives against cutting boards became audible as Ben drew closer. He recognized Hux’s shock of red hair and his own brother’s wild mane – longer, curlier and blacker than his own. Clearly Matt wasn’t the only one hitting the hair dye as of late.

Leia was near them, shaking her head as an unwilling audience of their latest argument (topic: French fries).

“I’m cutting them into perfect parallelogram shapes. See? Yours look like rhombi,” Kylo was ranting.

“You don’t need to shape the ends,” Hux snapped, equally exasperated. “They’re fries. Leave me alone and focus on your own pile.”

Kylo moved to grab one of Hux’s samples and waved it in front of his face. “Check out your peelings. You know it’s true!”

Leia caught his eye and grinned, and Ben threw his arms around her in greeting. “Mom,” he murmured. The buns of her hair only reached his chin, but her squeezing embrace was almost painful against his sides. Han and Poe were not far behind.

“Ma, it’s been a while,” Poe swooped in. “You look beautiful.” He kissed her hand. She rolled her eyes in response and gave him a disapproving look, but it failed to hide the redness in her cheeks.

“You’re welcome anytime, Poe.”

“Stop being a kiss-ass,” Kylo whirled around. He still had his knife in his hand, but Poe hadn’t so much as flinched.

“Always a pleasure, Kylo.” Hux was eyeing them both with a look of disdain – nothing new there. Poe thrust his hand out, his smile the very definition of charisma, though Hux seemed dubious not just of Poe but of human emotion in general. “I don’t think we’ve ever formally met. I’m Poe Dameron.”

“Hux. Charmed.”

“Just Hux, then?” Poe’s hand dropped to his side. If he was bothered by Hux’s rudeness, he chose not to show it. “Just like how Madonna is just Madonna?” Hux cast him a withering look, which only made Poe’s grin widen. “I can already tell we’re gonna be the best of friends.”

Ben and Kylo gripped their palms together, an action that made them look like they were arm-wrestling. “You’re still working out and couch-surfing,” Ben said, the corners of his lips twitching.

“You’re still Uncle Luke’s perfect little worker bee.”

A hurt expression flashed across Ben’s face. “I didn’t mean—“

“Father! We’re here.” Matt made a show of bursting through the door and immediately dropping his bags, producing a loud thud. His yellow hair looked more frizzy than usual. Trailing behind him was a shorter male – Finn – looking unsure of whether he was allowed to even enter the house.

“I was waiting for your call to go pick you up in town,” Han said, moving toward them.

“We hitched a ride with Uncle Chewy instead.”

“He’s scary,” Finn added. He looked frightened of the brief memory of Uncle Chewie, and of everyone in the immediate vicinity. Han waved a hand dismissively.

“He’s harmless, don’t be a wuss.”

“That’s my father,” Matt drawled. “He says a lot of things before thinking them through first. Father, this is Finn. The one who lives in Unit 2187-“

“Nice to meet you, Finn. You know, I’ve got your address memorized by now.”

“Sir, Matt’s told me a lot about you.” Finn shook Han’s hand, with a frown that he was apparently trying to pass off as a look of intense focus.

“Software engineering, eh?”

“Yup.” He shared a distressed look with Matt. “Um, gotta love that software.” There was a noticeable air of nervousness about him. When Han patted him on the back, it seemed more like a gesture of pity at his mental state.

“This is my mother.” Leia moved forward and kissed Finn on the cheek.

“Pleasure, Ma’am.”

“You’re younger than I thought you’d be. How old are you?”

“I’m twenty. I-is that bad?”

“I like you already,” she said, grin turning sly. “You’re honest.”

“Matt, aren’t you gonna introduce us?” The brothers joined them along with Poe and Hux, making the living room feel ten times more crowded. Finn seemed winded by the sheer number of people he was being introduced to at one time.

“That’s Ben, and Ren.”

“Ben, Ren,” Finn repeated, eyes wide.

Ben pointed to Matt’s hair, smirking. “And Ken doll.”

Finn’s gaze darted back and forth between all three brothers, taking in the matching faces. “This is… Really trippy,”

“And that’s Poe, Ben’s boyfriend.”

“Matt sure knows how to pick ‘em,” Poe said, looking him up and down.

“And that’s, uh, I honestly didn’t know Hux would be here.”

“Oh, he wasn’t invited, he just kind of wandered in,” Kylo spoke up, and Finn croaked rather than laughed, because Kylo hadn’t even looked like he was joking.

“I’m so happy to finally meet you guys,” Finn said, finally smiling. “Matt’s told me all about you.”

As everyone helped prepare the dinner table, Poe slipped out into the backyard and approached Leia. She had her back turned and was tugging a freshly dried table cloth off the clothesline.

“What is it, Poe?” She called, hearing the crunch of his boots. “You have that look in your eye again.”

“I just… I- uh,”

“Strange. I’ve never heard you stutter before.”

He took hold of the other end of the table cloth. When she faced him, she had a knowing look, which Poe found strangely comforting. She probably knew, probably saw it coming long before he had even thought of doing it. Just like years ago, when he was just the family friend and she asked if he liked Ben in that way (he hadn’t, yet), or when she asked if Ben and him were dating (they weren’t officially, yet). Leia was astute that way; she was a mother who knew him better than his own ever had.

Everyone in town admired former mayor Leia Organa. But what Poe felt toward her was akin to an almost fannish devotion. He’d never admitted to her personally. Ben knew of his hero-worship, and found it weird. Neither mother nor son was aware that Leia was the main inspiration for his decision to go to law school.

“I’m going to propose to Ben.” Naturally, she didn’t even blink.

“That’s wonderful. That’s – Poe, that’s amazing news. When are you going to move in?”

Suddenly, the tables had turned. Poe froze, a revelation hitting him now, too. “Move?”

“I presume you’ve already worked out a plan with Luke? I’m sure he’d love having the two of you live with him, at least until he retires. Then you can run the farm together.” It suddenly hit him that perhaps there were some things that even Leia didn’t seen coming. But she should’ve known, Ben had promised to tell her—

“I – uh – Ben didn’t—? Well, we’ve made plans.” She laughed, while his anxiety was multiplying tenfold. “What’s so funny?”

“I’m so excited,” she said, her eyes shining. “To see the look on Han’s face when you tell him.”

Poe paled.

--

“Ben,” he hissed urgently. His boyfriend was in the middle of setting the table. “You didn’t tell them you’re coming with me?”

“I haven’t found the time. What’s the big deal?”

“We’re leaving in a week. I thought you’d settled everything with them. You can’t just disappear on them at a moment’s notice.”

“I have everything under control.”

“You have to tell them as soon as possible.”

“What’s the rush? You can go ahead, and I’ll follow. I know you want to be senator by the age of 35 and all that shit, but I don’t have to be there every step of the way.”

Ben’s words stung. Poe bit his lip, but remained persistent. “But—“

“Dinner!” The two men whirled around to see Han already bringing the turkey to the table. “Ben, do you have the—The—“ He was red-faced and struggling under the weight of it, but offering to help Han Solo with any task was akin to asking for death.

“Electric turkey knife? Yeah, Uncle Luke lent it to me earlier. It’s in my bag,” came Ben’s retort, and before departing, he shot Poe a familiar look that meant they had a lot to talk about later.
