Finn is 22 and there are innocent people dying.

Slip's blood is on his helmet, and even though it doesn't have weight it is heavy.

Screams and sobs and the whizzing of blasters fill the air and he can't do this. It isn't right.

He's having doubts. Stormtroopers don't have doubts.

They are nothing. One part to a bigger system. Gears in a machine. If they stop working they are thrown out and replaced.

Kylo Ren is staring at him. Kylo Ren can feel his doubt and his weakness and he is going to die.

He is going to be thrown out and replaced and it will mean nothing because he is nothing.

He wants to be something.

He marches through the halls and takes his helmet off, unable to bear the weight of Slip's blood. His damnation.

He has to get away.

Phasma finds him, tells him to put his helmet on, offer his blaster for inspection. He's terrified. He can't breathe-

"Go. Quickly. After Kylo Ren has finished, tell the guards you're escorting him, and get him to a TIE-fighter. I'll keep them occupied."

He stares. She couldn't- could she?

Yes. He remembers. He had been young and the memories are fuzzy at best, time and The First Order smearing the picture. But he had followed after her like a duckling its mother.
And she had let him. Had comforted him when he was barely six and torn away from the life he had. Like a mother. No amount of reconditioning could keep that away from him forever.

"Thank you... Mom."

She reels back a bit, surprised by his bluntness. It aches somewhere inside herself, but in a good way. Because he will be okay, if only he can die as something more than a stormtrooper. More than what she will likely go down as.

"You're welcome, Son."
