The First Order decided that although Ben Solo's equal abilities in the Light and Dark side make him very powerful, he is also too much of a liability to be trusted.
Still, it'd be a waste to let go of that amount of raw power. Especially when running an operation requires such vast amount of energy. So they kidnap a young Ben Solo (maybe even as young as 15), sedate him, hook him to wires and different biotech, and thus have a Force-powered facility. The battery only requires a regular supply of nutriments through an IV to keep going. A perfect solution.

Until Han, Rey, Finn and Chewie running through Starkiller and finding Han's son in a glass tube, wires poking into him, in a complete daze. And Han finally knows what happened to his son after he went missing.
Bringing him back to the base is the easy. The hard part is helping him recover from +15 years of lost time and ample trauma.

Bonus:
+ After all these years feeling disconnected and being referred to as the "power source", Ben has a hard time feeling like a person at all.
++ Ben had visions through the Force, and thought they were hallucinations. Now that he is saved, he sometimes believes he is hallucinating that as well.

This fill was amazing! Gah! I just loved Han's reaction to it all, especially the beginning when he just freezes. Because of course he wouldn't be able to process everything right away, and then once he does he just snaps.
And of course, love Chewie's pragmatic "just shoot it" solution. ^^
