"Our mission has failed."

It pains him to say the words, but he pushes them out of his mouth. Was it just a few days ago that the Stormtroopers were massed before him on a cold world, awaiting the weapon to end all weapons? He was so full of power then, feeling larger than life.

Hux stares down at the pages of the speech he wrote. It's long. It's good. It's got a rhythm and a crescendo. It's all about how the First Order cannot be foiled, how the feeble Resistance may strike and strike again but they will never kill the passion that lies at the heart of their grand war machine.

"The Resistance has destroyed our greatest weapon. It is a victory for the First Order, yes. But it is a failure for us. An abject, utter failure."

When he'd written it, he'd assumed that they had a chance. They do not.

"We will report to Supreme Leader Snoke in thirty-six hours. We will--" He had plans. He had contingency plans. He had escape routes. They are quite useless now. "We are almost certainly heading to our fate."

The hall is very, very silent. He can't see the faces of the amassed Stormtroopers, but he can imagine them. Shock, perhaps. Disappointment. Maybe some of them are eagerly awaiting his next words, the plan that will make it all right.

He doesn't have anything except for a pack of Hosnian Blues in his jacket pocket.

"Very certainly, in fact." He fishes out the pack of Blues. Smoking is normally prohibited on the Finalizer, and he usually sneaks down to the air scrubbers to indulge after a particularly stressful day. What does it matter? He taps the pack on his palm next to the microphone, letting the thuds echo throughout the hall. "Does anyone have a light?"

Phasma does. Of course. Granted, it's a flamethrower on the lowest setting, but she obliges. He leans over and lights the cigarette off of her weapon. "Well," he says. "Smoke 'em if you got 'em."

He steps down from the podium, letting the microphone swing after him with a squeal of feedback. There's dead silence, until Phasma leans over and takes the mic, her modulated voice harsh and gritty in the echoing hall.

"You heard the General," she says, and follows Hux.

It's discouraging to see how quickly the most highly trained soldiers in the galaxy throw off the shackles of civilization. Four hours after his announcement, the ship is in chaos. Hux walks the halls with his pack of Blues as unmasked Stormtroopers run past, play-fighting with plastic pipes and stun sticks.

"Think fast, General!"

He catches the pipe as it's tossed at his head.

"Come on, try to get past us," the trooper taunts. She holds her stun stick out menacingly. "Gave you a fighting chance."

Her friends are laughing, but there's a gleam of real bloodlust in her eyes. Hux tries to be fair to those under his command, to mete out punishment fairly, to never snap or shout more than necessary. There are those who resent anyone in power, no matter how lenient.

"A chance indeed." He trips one easily, catches another under the knees. They're drunk. It's too easy to be a challenge, but satisfying enough to topple attackers head over heels again instead of pressing a button to make them all go away.

The woman drops her own stun stick and falls to his knees. "Do it," she says, doubled over in hysterical laughter. "Just finish it, General. It would be an honor. Don't let that monster kill us. Just finish us off already."

"Do it yourself." But he is a merciful man. He jabs her in the stomach with the stun stick and leaves her to convulse on the floor. Then he walks on, another Hosnian Blue between his lips, sleeves rolled up, jacket slung over his shoulder. Hux knows how to be a gracious host.

BB-8 of course but also the medical droids, the maintenance droids, etc.
Even R2 and 3PO have a soft spot for everyone's favorite rebel pilot.

Just like when BB-8 kept giving Finn electric shocks when he thought Finn had stolen the jacket, all the droids are a bit protective of their human.
Someone says something shitty to or about Poe at the base and their showers are ice cold thanks to the maintenance droids, for example.
Poe is oblivious to this special treatment and any victims of droid revenge just write it off as hazing from the other pilots.
Can be gen but Stormpilot is always a happy addition.

*If you go with Stormpilot - BB-8 and the other droids arranging romcom type moments for Finn and Poe, like being stuck in a lift together.

Hux controls younger brother Finn's life; he is his and is quite overprotective.

Kylo and Finn relationship is something Hux cannot stand and it must be ended. He uses every underhanded technique to separate them while keeping a good face.
