One night he arrived to seek his lover, and the small room was empty.

Through the window of the church he saw a pair of lawmen, blue uniforms starched against the late summer, and he crept round the side, pressing against the shingles to listen.

"I'll post the images, Officers, of course," Hux said, smooth. "I wish you the very best in tracking this killer of yours."

"Thank you, Father. We'll ask around, be out of your hair in a day or so."

As they left, he saw his lover drop the copies on top of the piano, sitting down at the bench to sigh heavily. Hux reached to unknit his own brow.

Kylo climbed in the open window and stood, suddenly unsure.

"Thank you for not telling me what you did," Hux said, as much to the sketch of Ben Solo on the piano top. "All those cadets." His eyes were empty now, no love there.

"I had to," he said, but the words fell lame from his lips. How could he explain the darkness that had gripped his heart, the rage he'd felt at his fellow men, how he'd hated them. How they'd taunted him for his parentage, his awkward body, his earnest heart. How he'd desired their flesh despite his hatred. "All I wanted was to leave."

"Leave. Go West."

"Come with me."

"No."

It was the ultimate betrayal, and Kylo stalked over to his lover, shoving him away from the piano to force eye contact.

"Or will you kill me, too?"

That night he was on a train, alone, back North to the Trans-Continental. The wind was bitter on his skin as he took a smoke out back, the red embers burning low to his fingers. He didn't look like the sketch no more, with his tan skin and long black hair, worker's callouses and hollow eyes, so he could risk the New York station for long enough to pass to Chicago.

Shiny red hair catches his eye in the station light, but when the man turns it's just a boy, slim and frail and not his preacher. It makes him feel empty inside, makes him think about turning himself in, taking his execution. Maybe he should have done that straight off. Not ruined a man's life with his lust.

He gets to Chicago and he knows he can't go any further alone.

The weather's turned by the time the train pulls back in. There's a deep chill to the air and rain hangs from leaves clinging to branches. Their heady summer was over.

There were no girls in the church this time, no chorus, no lights. He hesitates at the threshold, but something tells him he's needed. Door creaks open to silence, darkness, and a single sharp peal of the bell.

He's up the stairs before he can think and there, chair kicked out from his feet, Hux is dangling from the bell pull, noose tight round his throat. Kylo's on him in a second, holding him to keep the pressure while he fishes for the knife in his pocket and it's never fast enough that he's got him down on the floor, flat on his back like their first time and the rope's still bruising, Hux is still sputtering and he can't get purchase, he's going to cut him but he has to - and then the knife is under the rope and he's slicing up with such force he clips his own forehead -

- "Hux, Hux," he sobs as his lover sobs for breath.

"Brendol," he pants, voice thin, eyes closed. "My first name."

"Call me Ben," he says, fingers soothing over the purple-black snap in the pale skin, clerical collar torn open from the force of the noose.

"Ben," he manages, before he blacks out.

Ben worries his fingers over the fading bruises on Brendol's neck as his lover dozes on the train, each beat of the wheels luring him deeper into sleep. No more holy clothes for Hux, and no more lies for himself - no more hiding. They'd take their chances in California.

Poe's face gets horribly disfigured, be it in a crush or Kylo Ren's doing. Injury doesn't prevent him from flying x-wing, but the disfigurement is permanent and really really terribly looking. Poe has trouble coping with it.

+he blames himself for being vain or some asshole tells him he is vain and his friends try to reassure him.

I loved this! Absolutely loved this!

I really like how Leia ended up just tolerating Hux. To accept him would have been too much to ask, and really, the situation is shady no matter how much Bren and Ren defend each other.

I also like how there are consequences to all that happened: Ren doesn't want to be called Ben, he is cut off from the Force, his relationship with his parents is still awkward. It really adds weight to all that happened.

Part of me, the greedy Solo-Family-feels slut with no shame, is screaming "Moooooore!" But that just shows how good the fic is. The epilogue works very nicely, so good job!! And thanks again!

OP again, can I just say this is going not at all how I might have expected and I love it. The Trio met!! Han (oh Han, don't, just don't)!!

When Han talked to Kylo, he didn't stab him, instead, he ran to General Hux waiting on a ship

Love it!

Once Finn is up and about again he starts settling in to the Resistance, and they notice he's...good. Really good. At lots of things. His marksmanship is making some of the veterans jealous. He found a to-do list a mile long in the hangars, and the pilots came back from a three day mission to find the place spotless and in better order than they've ever seen. He picked up Binary before he was even out of the Medbay, and now appears to be reading manuals on x-wing maintenance for fun.

Basically, Stormtrooper training is thorough. Finn is already theoretically capable of doing nearly any job on the base, and since his life up until now has been almost completely training or work rotations, he's picking up what he doesn't know at an alarming pace.

The Commanders are starting to tussle over which division gets to keep him. Some of the more opportunistic Resistance folk have noticed that Finn will absolutely haul boxes for eight hours straight without complaint, and have been offloading some of the jobs they don't want to do. Others are jealous. Finn just wants to be helpful.

I'm so sorry that it's taking so long to set up omg I just wanted to follow the leverage episode pattern of "show the audience what happened, and then get the client to meet the crew" but apparently the whole "show the audience what happened" thing is taking longer than I had meant it to...

so no graphic torture, but how graphic are you cool with when it comes to fight scenes? or did you just want a sentence like "eliot did some hella rad shit with his lightsaber and fucked up supreme leader snoke's shit"? :P

I didn't realise that some of the dialogue got a bit messed up there. :S

Rey was supposed to say "we need your help" and then Han was supposed to say "Well why should we"

yeppers. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it, I've only seen the movie one and a half times so I was worried that I mightn't be getting the character's voices that well

Having been to Ikea a few too many times recently, I'm all for this. That damned two-hour+ walk is enough to drive anyone to the edge of their temper.

Hux is found hanging from the chandelier in his overseeing mansion. There’s a suicide note, written in trademark messy scrawl. Tell Ren I love him, Tell Phasma she’s not at fault..
DCI Dameron holds the note in his hands and instantly knows it’s a fraud, it’s Finn. All he can do is rub at his eyes and shove his hands in the pockets of his overcoat.

Finn’s at his kitchen table.

"Have you come for sex?" Poe sounds bored.

“I would never, darling,” Finn smiles at him, Hux’s DNA underneath his fingernails. “I came to see if you were alright.”
