Let Me Tell You 'bout My Best Friend

(Anonymous) 2015-12-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
FN-2187 was used to following orders given to him by his superior officers. That generally meant his squad leader or Captain Phasma. Who frightened him a tiny bit. (A lot.)

So, when he was on his way to the mess hall for his morning rations, he didn't even think twice about stopping when a deep voice ordered him to stop. He regretted that deeply ingrained obedience when he turned to find it was Kylo Ren.

Oh, bantha shit. He was going to die.

"FN-2187, correct?"

FN-2187 went to attention, ignoring the panic clawing up his throat. "Yes, sir."

The fact that his mask obscured any expression didn't lessen the feeling of being a bug under a microscope. "Come with me."

Going. To. Die.

"Yes, sir." Because obedience had been forced into his brain for years and years, he followed behind the the man, just shy of his billowing cloak. He was pretty sure touching the cloak would get him murdered even worse.

Somehow. There was probably a force power for that would bring him back to die again.

"Our success is at hand," Kylo Ren said, hands balled into fists of impending violence.

When the silence started to stretch out, FN-2187 ventured a moderately confused, "Sir."

Kylo Ren nodded to himself, hands finally unclenching. Just as long as they didn't go near the lightsaber, FN-2187 was probably safe. Probably. "Soon we will complete a long awaited vision of order for this universe. The traitorous Republic--" he spit out the word like it left a bad taste in his mouth. How everyone within the First Order knew it should be said. "--will be crushed and our legacy reclaimed."

"Yes, sir," FN-2187 replied, still a little unsure where this was going. Was his commitment being questioned? Oh, poodoo. He did no want to go for reconditioning. "Death to the rebel scum," he continued, trying to add in the confidence that usually worked on his squad leader.

Somehow that managed to work at relaxing the tension in Kylo Ren's posture even further.

He suddenly caught himself, back going stiff as he nodded at FN-2187. "Correct. As you were, FN-2187." And strode off like a dramatic, black ship over the paleness of the walls and floors of the Starkiller base.

What the pfassk just happened there?

--

The second time he was singled out by the leader of the Knights of Ren was just as confusing as the first time.

"FN-2187."

Though he didn't even have his mental freak out when Kylo Ren appeared from out of nowhere, looming over FN-2187 where he was in the middle of completing his duties. In the waste management section.

Which was possibly the last place Kylo Ren should be. Why did this keep happening to him?

"Sir."

"Walk with me," he said, turning to stalk off without glancing back to make sure he was being following. Which he was because FN-2187 wasn't suicidal. Like the last time, it was silent until the man spoke again to maybe, possibly explain what he was going there. Except how he didn't. He did not explain anything.

"Doubts," Kylo Ren began, looking off like the posters that were the only sanctioned decorations allowed within the barracks. They... were not terribly popular. "Doubts lurk within the First Order."

Which wasn't terrifying to hear at all.

"Sir," FN-2187 settled on because there was no way he was going to confirm or deny that. He saw what happened to the last control console that angered Kylo Ren. He saw that poodoo.

"They lurk within many." Who would be purged or reconditioned, FN-2187 was certain. And really hoped he wasn't in that number despite... you know... having them. "They cloud our--their vision. Keep them from seeing what needs to be done."

That... was an odd slip that FN-2187 was in no way going to draw attention to.

"Our strength is our commitment to the First Order," he repeated without having to even think about it. Because that had been repeated since he could remember.

"Commitment to the First Order," Kylo Ren echoed. "You're correct, FN-2187."

He put his hand on FN-2187's shoulder (!!!!) and nodded before striding past in the opposite direction. The 'conversation' was done with it seemed. And Kylo Ren was heading for a sealed bulkhead. But who was FN-2187 to correct him?

My favorite part of this is that "Death to the rebel scum" is just your basic, reliable conversational response.

If you ever decide to add on to this I would love to read more, or anything else you write!
