Re: Leia and Finn GEN, Poe/Finn optional
(Anonymous) 2016-01-04 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)---------------------------------
Nobody comes down to a shooting range at night, not even people in the resistance. Finn has claimed the spot for his own for the past week. It is familiar and comforting, as much as he wishes it wasn’t. Shooting is the same no matter what side of a war you’re on. And besides, they had told him that he had free access anywhere on the base he wanted.
And wasn’t that strange. Not having his days ordered down to the second, not being overworked to the point of exhaustion or getting precisely six hours of sleep or having his food come in brown gelatinous blocks that were shelf stable but not particularly appetizing, at least not now that he’s tasted the food they have here.
It’s a revelation.
And free time. He’s never had that before. That’s sort of why he has claimed this corner of the base. Finn tried to join other crew, or help Poe with his ship maintenance, but neither worked out. Besides, he was told to do something he enjoyed and there is something he likes about shooting blasters, the weight of them in his hands, a rapid release of fire and looking up to see a row of bullseyes. He was the best marksman in his old squad and it shows.
He’s so focused that he doesn’t even notice the General enter.
All of a sudden she’s just there, two little booths away from him, with her own target and a small sidearm. She shoots him a quick smile.
“Just trying to keep my hand in.” She says, before aiming and taking fire at her own target.
Finn goes back to his own work. He wants to say something, but he is still a little frightened of the General, how everyone seems to be in awe of her. And besides that, she is his new commanding officer, and any well trained Stormtrooper will default to silence.
“You’re quite good.” The General says, and Finn stops immediately and falls to attention.
“I was trained well, Ma’am.”, he says automatically, used to turning all compliments back onto the First Order. Another piece of training to break himself of.
To his relief, she laughs. “Yes,” She says, a twinkle in her eye, “I suppose you are all better trained these days. Back when I was young Stormtroopers couldn’t hit the side of a barn. There is something to be said for quality over quantity.”
“I was the best in my class.” He blurts out. Stupid, stupid, why would she want to know that?
“Oh really?” She says, and seems genuinely interested. “Stormtoopers have classes now? Back in my day they were clones. . . “
So he tells her about it. At first he tries to tell her about the most relevant parts, as if her were making a report. About what an average Stormtrooper learns, about the planet where they are raised in unison, about what protocols the first order has in place. But as the conversation goes on, it moves into his personal life. His classes, the other troopers in his bunk. Slip, who had died on Jakku. How he had been recommended for officer training after his empathetic traits were fixed.
General Organa patted him on the arm and said ‘I quite appreciate empathy.’
Eventually they moved to the mass hall, General Organa getting a cup of coffee and Finn juice. He had tried coffee a couple of days ago and found it far too bitter.
He was in the middle of listening to General Organa talk about the time she was captured by pirates whilst pregnant and still rescued herself just in time for Han Solo to show up when a resistance member poked his head through the door.
“General,” He said, sighing in relief, “The representative from Yartrop will be online in fifteen minutes.” He blinked. “What’s happening?”
“Nothing,” She said, getting up from the hard cafeteria table. “Just talking to a friend.”
She collected her mug and put a hand on Finn’s shoulder.
“Try to get some sleep.”
He watched her walk out before leaving his cup in the bin to be washed and heading back to his designated bunk. Snuggling in for the night, Finn thought that he could definitely get used to working under General Leia.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)oh my gosh, that was great! and honestly, not at all cracky - really just as sweet and sincere as Finn himself. Finn and Leia trading stories in a caf at midnight is my new favorite thing, oh!
