It confuses me when people say they only search based on kudos/comments, because my experience with "big name authors and stories" has almost always resulted in that "why is this so popular" reaction. I sometimes joke that if you want to hit it big in fandom just write as many cliches and tropes and make the characters as OTT OOC as possible, but man sometimes that's lowkey true.
