When I look for fics to read, I go by kudos because more people leave kudos than comments. A lot of comments doesn't necessarily mean a lot of people read the fic. 50 comments could just be the author and their friends talking back and forth, not 50 different reviews. 50 kudos means 50 different people read and liked the fic.
As an author, I definitely prefer kudos over comments. Back in the LJ days, I preferred having my fics show up on rec lists rather than receive comments. But I personally don't like comments because I feel obligated to respond and sometimes I really don't want to.
