I was totally picturing Finn staying with the resistance and training as a medic or some other notes stereotypically gendered female role like that and we'd still get lots of plot about him learning what it means to be the resistance, while Rey galavants and learns to be a Jedi (stereotypically gendered male role) and comes back to see Finn like "honey, I'm home!" and Finn is all "I've been waiting for you <3" Don't really see how that's turning a woman into a Mary Sue, suspect some internalized misogyny on the part of some ppl who want their strong female characters to be very careful not to overshadow anybody and remain palatable. Also, the Mary Sue problem of "she's better than all other girls" by having multiple strong females who all display different strengths.
