I don't think it's Disney being stubbornly anti-gay, so much as they're a giant corporation trying to make money. If they have an explicitly gay character in a movie, there are several countries in the world that will not show that movie in any capacity. And that includes big markets like Russia, where (disgustingly) homosexuality is illegal. (I've also heard people say China, which only allows theatrical releases for a certain number of international movies a year, would not allow a major movie with a lead queer character, but I don't know enough about that situation to be able to say whether that's true or not.)
