I think it stems from tumblr habits like an anon above mentioned, so I think people who are newer to fandom - or who at least never experienced fandom pre-tumblr - don't realize it's rude.

Then again, there are always rude people in fandom, so who really knows what's considered good fandom etiquette anymore.
