She can tell. Of course she can.
But, because Leia knows Poe and because she knows torture, she doesn't say anything. Not at first.
It wasn't like it was the right time anyway. He'd made it back from a mission, bloody and bruised (and oh god why hadn't he signaled for a rescue instead of bragging his way home, why did he have to be so damn- /god/), of course the first thing to do was debrief him. After that- after finding out that the plans were still potentially out there- she sent a small squad back to Jakku to investigate.
Poe didn't go. Poe wasn't allowed to go.
Sure, he argued, but he was a good soldier and he listened when his General put her foot down.
She had a feeling he knew why. He didn't say, but there was a tension in his shoulders.
She didn't want to do this.
She had to do this.
When they were finally alone, and she made sure that they were alone, that despite everything going on they got this moment, she didn't waste time.
"You don't have to talk to me. But-" He was already breaking, looking away from her, trying as hard as he could to keep up the 'I'm okay' act, Leia pushed on, "You should speak to someone."
"Ah... Ma'am." He smiled. Just barely. Eyes on the floor. "Should have included it in the official record, huh?"
"You know that's not what I mean." She's being too sharp with him. She can't help it. She should help it. "Poe." She said with a little more purpose, but a little softer all the same. "I've... experienced what the Dark Side can do." Leia cleared her throat. "Under those circumstances."
Very slowly, his eyes rise up to meet hers. She holds the look unflinchingly and carefully- so carefully because she knows that sometimes being touched again afterwards can hurt more than the /experience/ itself, Leia reaches out and puts her hand on his arm.
"You were brave." Her voice is a little stilted, because that's not what she wants to tell him. She wants to say that his father would be proud. That /she's/ proud. She wants him to know that someone loves him, that someone will no matter what the First Order has done, no matter if he'd caved after five seconds or stayed quiet after five hundred years.
Nobody did that for her, but she wants to do it now not because of that but because it was true.
But-
But Leia knows that her love just twists and corrupts. She thinks of her dear, precious, broken boy and wonders how on earth he could have done this to someone, to someone that she loves?
/Easy answer, Princess/ (she's always a Princess in her head when she's angry with herself). /Because of you/.
So she doesn't tell Poe what she should.
"Talk to someone." Leia says instead, lips pressed tight together and just barely smiling. "Please."

Oh that hurts so good

Leia *understanding* because she has been there herself with Vader and took care of Han after his torture and now she is here again but she knows it's her son who did this... So much pain. So beautiful.
