The Armory

Kylo was in one of the training rooms, his mask and robes taken off as he sparred with his lightsaber. Hux stood in the doorway, watching his Knight as he slashed and parried at imaginary opponents. Though he’d be loath to say anything out loud, he could have watched Kylo wielding the unstable weapon all day. Finally, the elegant weapon of a bygone age gave a final hiss as Kylo turned it off and turned to the other man.

“And what brings a general of the Finalizer all the way down here? It can’t possibly be to train with something.”

Hux ignored the jab at the way he didn’t carry a weapon around. Taking a few steps into the room, he ran a hand through Kylo’s sweat-soaked hair, pressing a quick kiss to his lips. “I was thinking perhaps you could explain to me why your fellow Knights have stolen my cat.”

Kylo nipped gently at Hux’s neck. “They actually took Millicent?”

Hux sucked in a quick breath. “She’s not in my quarters. I can only assume they’re holding her hostage.”

“She’ll be fine,” Kylo said, punctuating each word as he alternately kissed and bit at Hux’s exposed throat. “I’ve known Quentin a long time. He and F’nark won’t harm a hair on that cat’s head.”

Hux tried half-heartedly to pull away from his lover. “I’m still on-duty.”

Kylo grabbed his wrists and pulled him down towards the mats that were on the floor. “I suggest you take some time out for training.

Hux found it hard to argue as Kylo slid a hand under his uniform tunic, running a hand along his chest. Well, maybe he could just take ten minutes out of the day…

The sound of his comm going off interrupted the pair an annoyingly short time late. With a final pant and thrust, Hux reached for the comm as he spent himself inside Kylo. “General Hux here.”

“General, we have a situation down in level three,” Phasma said, her voice cool and remote as always.

“Can you take care of it yourself?” Hux said, still stuck in a post-coital haze.

“Sir, this is involving one of the Knights. You’d best get down here,” she replied. Hux could hear shouts and the sounds of blaster fire going on in the background. That cleared his head immediately.

Hux cursed and hastened to put on his clothes. Kylo looked up at him, his longish hair sticking to one cheek. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m not sure. Something to do with one of the Knights. I have to go,” he said, feeling much more like a babysitter than he had just a few minutes ago. “Meet me down on level three when you can.” It was clearly going to take Kylo more time to get put back together. The man wore about five layers, which was really three more than he actually needed.

“Be careful,” Kylo warned, eyes going distant. “I sense a disturbance.”

The apprehensive feeling in the back of his mind only grew as he approached the third level. There was an alarm blaring now and he could see scorch marks on the walls where the blasters had gone off. Phasma had evacuated most everyone out of the area with the exception of several of her trusted troops. Her chrome helmet swiveled towards Hux as he strode up, looking less put together than usual. “Sir.”

“Which Knight is it?” Hux questioned.

“F’nark Ren.” Of course, Hux thought. It was always the quiet ones. “We’re attempting to contain the situation, but no one has been able to get near him.” And they weren’t likely to, with the Force able to be used at his fingertips.

Hux braced himself for what was sure to be an unpleasant task ahead. Phasma stopped him before he could go any further down the hall. “Sir…be careful.” She shoved a blaster into his hands. “If you have a shot, don’t hesitate to take it.” Hux gave a brisk nod and rounded the corner.

The general took in the situation in a glance. The two Knights were ahead of him, still masked, but half-dressed, as if something had surprised them in their quarters. Quentin had his hands up and looked like he was struggling to hold onto an invisible rope. F’nark was about ten feet away down the corridor, one hand holding onto a staff. The end of it was being shoved into the throat of a Stormtrooper, who was remaining perfectly still. The other hand was holding onto, what Hux realized with a shock, was a thermal detonator. At his feet lay the prone forms of two other Stormtroopers. Hux couldn’t tell if they were alive or dead.

“Vermin. They’re all vermin.” Hux realized that the raspy voice was coming from F’nark. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he filed away the fact that the Knight didn’t sound precisely like he was all there. It was like listening to someone talking in their sleep. The man’s body had slight tremors running through it and Hux recognized the look of someone being held in place by the Force. He realized that Quentin was the only reason why they hadn’t already been blown to hell.

“General,” Quentin said with a nod in his direction. There was a definite strain in his voice. His hands remained steady in that same holding-something-invisible pattern. “Good of you to join us. I hope you have a plan, because I can’t hold onto him forever. He’s been fighting me with everything he’s got.”

“What happened?” Hux hated to waste precious moments, but he couldn’t go into this without knowing anything.

“Night terrors. They got him bad this time. I tried to calm him down.” Quentin gave a short, humorless bark of a laugh. “Didn’t work. He’s stuck somewhere in his own head, general, somewhere I can’t reach him.”

Hux should have felt fear or apprehension or some other emotion that would make him quake in his boots. Instead, what he felt was mad. This was his ship, his crew, and it was being terrorized all because some pissant of a Knight had a nightmare and decided to go on the rampage. He stormed past Quentin with only one clear idea in mind on how to regain control of the situation.

“F’nark Ren! You will put down your weapons immediately!” Hux snapped. The Knight’s masked face slowly turned towards him, his head tilting in confusion. Well, he wasn’t immediately being Force thrown into a wall, so that was a good sign. He persisted, getting as close to the Knight as he dared. “You are aboard the Finalizer and will desist with what you are doing immediately. That’s a direct order from the Supreme Leader!”

At first, nothing changed. The Knight continued to struggle against the invisible bonds holding him. Then his head shook back and forth, like a sleepwalker waking up from a dream. “What…” He glanced down at the weapons in his hands like he was unsure of how they had gotten there. The grip on them didn’t loosen. The Stormtrooper was still being kept on her toes by the staff. Hux didn’t even know what it did. He also really didn’t want to find out.

It occurred to the general that he still had the blaster in his hand. If ever he was to have a perfect shot, this was it. He had it set right at his hip. But looking at the Knight standing there, looking lost and confused rather than the usual murderous terror of the galaxy, it stirred a little bit of something in the part of Hux’s heart that was still capable of feeling softer emotions. They were friends. Friends didn’t kill one another for no good reason.

He waited, telling himself that if F’nark didn’t put down that detonator in three seconds, he would shoot him. One… Nothing happened. Hux took aim. Two… He just kept slowly looking around, unsure of where he was and what he was doing. The ginger’s finger tightened on the trigger. Thr—The detonator’s charge was clicked back into the neutral setting. F’nark slid it back into the space on his vest from which it had come. Both Hux and the Stormtrooper breathed a sigh of relief as he pulled the staff away from her throat. Hux picked up his comm. “Captain Phasma?”

“Yes, commander?”

“Send a medical droid down here with the strongest sedative we have on board.” He watched as Quentin moved forward, cautiously approaching his fellow Knight. F’nark began to shake, little jolts running throughout his entire body. For the first time since they had started coming on board his ship, Hux had serious reservations about letting the Knights of Ren stay.

Quentin wouldn’t even look him in the eye as they watched over the prone form of the small Knight. F’nark was sedated and asleep once again, his face never relaxing even when drugged. Neither the medical droids nor the human personnel had any solid reason why he’d suddenly snapped the way he had. “Battle fatigue,” one old grey-haired nurse had said succinctly. “Sometimes, it all just catches up with soldiers at the worst possible time.”

Kylo was standing guard, watching over his fellow Knight with a care that Hux had never seen him show another living being besides himself. He’d been pacing back and forth for an hour, rushing back to F’nark’s side anytime the Knight’s fingers so much as twitched. He’d tried a mind probe to find out the root source of his behavior only to be driven back, clutching the side of his helmet. Even sedated, F’nark’s defenses were too strong.

“Thanks,” Quentin said from behind his mask.

“For what? Not killing him?” Hux asked.

“You could have. It was well within your rights. Nobody would have given a damn.” Quentin didn’t sound bitter. Instead, his voice held a pragmatic note.

“I think the Supreme Leader might have something to say if I killed one of his Knights,” General Hux said.

Quentin’s mask slowly turned towards Hux and he shook his head slowly. “How do you think he got this way in the first place?”

That gave Hux pause for thought. Quentin went over to where Kylo was crouched next to F’nark’s bedside and laid a hand on his shoulder. “You can’t do anymore for him right now. I’ll watch him.”

Something seemed to pass between the two old comrades that Hux wasn’t able to sense because they both turned and looked at him simultaneously. Kylo nodded and got up; grasping Quentin’s gloved hand with his own. “Let me know if there’s a change in his condition.” Kylo and Hux left the medical bay, neither one of them saying a word to the other.

“It has nothing to do with how I feel about them personally. They’re a danger to the whole ship!” Hux said irritably, pacing back and forth in his quarters.

Kylo hadn’t said much during the argument, only growing surlier and surlier. “Did you think they were harmless? That their powers would only affect their enemies?”

“I expected them to have enough self-control not to murder my crew or threaten to blow up half my ship!” Hux snapped back.

“We’re weapons, Hux! You can’t expect them to go against their natures,” Kylo yelled.

“The crew is terrified.” The general pinched the bridge of his nose. “What am I supposed to tell them? ‘I’m so sorry if a few of you end up dead. I’m sure it won’t happen again.’ They’re terrified of the Knights.”

Kylo glared at the man he’d come to rely on for so much. Anger was tight in his voice. “And what about you? How do you feel?”

Hux was taken aback. “I—What does it matter?”

Kylo drew close to Hux, his dark eyes flashing. Hux felt a warning signal go off in his head. He’d seen that look too many times before, particularly right before Kylo had driven a lightsaber through his opponents’ chests. “It matters to me. Is that what you feel? That you have to be afraid of us?”

“Don’t put words in my mouth. I never said that,” Hux said irritably.

“But you feel it! Admit it, you’re afraid of me.” Kylo reached out with a hand. Hux felt the invisible choking sensation close in around his throat. He couldn’t help the automatic response as his eyes widened and a hand went up to his throat, trying desperately to get more air in. He tried to tell Kylo to stop and found there was no air left in his lungs.

Dark spots began to appear in front of Hux’s eyes and still Kylo’s relentless Force choke wouldn’t let up. A stab of icy fear entered his heart. He’d always known that being with Kylo Ren was a danger. The man was completely unstable at the best of times. But he’d never thought that Kylo would actually try to kill him. Hurt him, maybe, in one of his more unbalanced moods, but kill him? The thought that these moments might be his last were terrifying.

As Hux sunk down to his knees, the sensation on his throat abruptly pulled away. He gasped in large gulps of air. Looking up at Kylo, he could see a myriad of emotions go across his lover’s face. He looked stricken, like he had realized a line had been crossed.

“Hux--”

The general held out a hand, keeping Kylo at arm’s length. “Don’t you touch me.”

Kylo flinched as if Hux had physically reached out and struck him. “I didn’t--”

Hux got back to his feet. His features were hard as flint. “Get out.”

Kylo didn’t even protest. He made his way to the door. He stopped when it opened as the rest of Hux’s words were flung at his back. “And don’t come back.”

Only when he was left along did Hux realize that they’d both wounded each other the only way they knew how. Now things were broken between them and he didn’t know if they would ever be repaired. He swiped away the wetness at the corners of his eyes with a furious hand.

IT'S ALWAYS THE QUIET ONES! I'd be smug that I TOTALLY called that, but oh nooo, the fallout. Hux's ship almost gets blown up and his boyfriend assaults him and the few tentative friends he could talk to about that are the ones he has to kick out because Duty First. And his cat's been stolen! What a shitty day to be Hux.

It's funny how the Knights were all so heavy handed with their shovel speeches that Hux just grimly anticipated their threats as he did their eccentricity, but now that Kylo has hurt HIM, and he can only deal with it HIMSELF, with no super team of weirdos to leap to HIS defence, it must seem so lonely :(

It seems like every set of eyes was suddenly on a now blushing Poe. He began to look around at them and stuttered out. “I didn’t steal anyone!”

“Liar! I felt it! You took him from us!” The sudden outburst from such a small child is enough to draw Finn backwards.

He hears a small broken gasp and turns towards Poe whose eyes widen. “Poe?” The pilot’s hands lift up and he tries to grab his throat, his mouth falling open as his face starts to whiten. “Poe!

Finn turns towards Ani, the boy has gone silent but there is an intent to his expression that looks horribly out of place for a small child. Realization hits him. “Ani…Ani stop. You’re hurting him!” It seems everyone else finally catches up because Luke and Rey are suddenly besides the still struggling Poe.

Finn drops to his knees. “Ani!’ He lifts his eyes to stare at Kylo. Hux is looking at the whole thing with a blank expression and at this point he’s forgotten about the Knights. “TELL HIM TO STOP!”

“ANAKIN STOP!”

Poe gasps once more and falls back, Luke is thankfully quick enough to grab him before he falls down on the floor. Finn wastes no time running towards his side.

“Papa?” Finn tilts his head back, still too shocked about what had just happened to hide the horror in his own expression. Ani’s eyes widen for a second before he takes a step back.

“You’re afraid too…” His voice is barely a whisper. A sudden wave of nausea and guilt flows through him. But before he gets a chance to—what—apologize? Kylo Ren was there. Wrapping the small child in his arms and lifting it up/

This is not how Finn imagined this meeting happening. Although to be fair he imagined more bloodshed and screaming.

The screaming did come. It started as soft whimpers from the boy before fat tears began to stream down his young face, which he buried against his father’s shoulder. Kylo’s expression was unreadable but the Knight was already turning around on his heel and walking towards his men.

“This is for the best, believe me.” Hux words finbally snapped him out of his mindset.

“No.” Finn lifted himself up. “You’re not taking him like this.”

Yeah, maybe he was out of his element. Maybe he had no idea what he was getting himself into. But that child, his son, had crossed the galaxy to find him and Finn wasn’t just going to cower away and give up on him.

He couldn’t see Kylo’s expression, but he could see Ani’s face buried in his father’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry. I’m not afraid of you, Ani.”

“You are, I can feel it.” Finn flinched. He should know better than to lie to people who are powerful with the Force. “I’ve always felt you—“ Ani gripped Kylo’s shoulder and hiccupped. “That’s why I wanted to bring you home, I felt when you left. When you left me.”

How could he tell him that he’d left because he didn’t even know about him. He was suddenly overwhelmed by how own feelings of betrayal. He’d known the First order had used him, but he wouldn’t have expected this from them in a million years.

“I’m sorry.” He says instead because Ani might be more powerful and advanced than most children his age should be, but he’s still just a child and he doesn’t deserve to know that. Not yet.

Right now he needs to be both brave and the mature one here. “I think—papa and daddy need to talk, sweetie. Alone.”

“Finn, no.” Finn turns his glare at Poe, who quickly stops. The pilot’s voice is hoarse and he’s still recovering from what just happened. He doesn’t trust Kylo, but this is personal.

Kylo takes a deep breath and turns back at them. His expression is impossible to read. Finn expects an argument but Ani cuts the other man off by touching his face. “Please.” There’s an exchange between the two of them and Finn doesn’t doubt they have a silent conversation before the Knight’s shoulder drop.

“Sister Eija, look after Ani for me.”

One of the Knights steps forwards, Finn’s surprised when the Mask comes off. A dathomirian he recognizes from his years of studies as a Stormtrooper. He’d heard there were none left. But the markings are recognizable enough.

“Hello again, little prince.”

Finn doesn't want to leave his son with one of the Knights of Ren, but to his surprise the boy's eyes light up at the sight of the woman and he immediately reaches for her.

Once he is safely on her arms Kylo Turns towards him. “Shall we?”

Finn nods.

“Finn, wait!” Rey is by his side suddenly.

“I have to Rey, we need to know more about Ani—and I don’t think he should listen to what I have to say.” He has to do this for him.

“I know.” Rey nods. “But take this, please.”

She presses against his open hand her lightsaber. The metal is cool and familiar against his hand and he nods. “And if he tries anything, whip his ass.” He can’t help but smirking at her.

“That’s a promise I can keep.”

He began to walk away, half expecting for Kylo to try to argue, but to his surprise footsteps soon began to follow him. That’s when he let the breath he hadn’t realized he’s been holding.

-

“What do you want in exchange of forgetting about this? Weapons? Information?” Kylo hisses. “Let’s stop wasting both our times and just tell me what you want. To be left to marry your beloved pilot in peace?”

Finn turns around and crosses his arms over his chest. “What I want is to never have to deal with you or the First order again. And for you to never come anywhere near that child again.”

Kylo’s hand jumps to his lightsaber before Finn has enough to lift his arm. “But!” To his surprise the other man does stop. “That’s clearly not what Ani wants.” He drops his hand to his side. "He refused to tell us anything until you were around.”

He doesn’t know how or why, but he loves Kylo Ren, and as distressed as he reacted to the idea of Kylo forcefully taking him back there, Finn knows they would only get a similar reaction if they told him he would never see his father again.

“Whenever either of us likes it or not, we are going to have to cooperate.”

For the well-being of Ani. Finn might have no idea what being a father entails and he’s only known of this child for less than a week, but there is no way he’s going to abandon him now nor is he going to let the First Order try to corrupt him like they did him.

"And be parents."

-

AN: This chapter was a difficult one, I ended up rewriting a big portion of it to show him turning his power on Poe and show how unstable his abilities are, he has been under Snoke's influence since he was "born" after all. And to show why Finn is going to have to need Kylo around (even if he really doesn't want to).

*Does Kylo sound a little jealous, mnnnn.

Beneath the greatcoat and starched collar, Hux is a lithe man of pale porcelain skin and trim muscles built from dirty scraps as a cadet. What many do not know is that upon the general's sharp shoulders are delicate black lines picked between scars and translucent washes of colour over his light freckles. Across his shoulders lay flowers of his home planet; Abbar Eye, Vinima, Violet Maiden, and Rattlereed. All sturdy, hardy plants that stand tall in the constant rain of Arkanis. Blooms and leaves he will never see again if the First Order succeeds in bringing the galaxy to heel, bound to his ship and his duty to oversee the new empire. The very same flowers he had put in a formal request to have laid on his coffin ever since he was promoted to a rank that would receive a proper burial. At night he prays his last sight of the flowers he could name as a child won't be the reflection he sees in a mirror, nor the first sight his mother sees when he returns home from the war.

---

In the group 'fresher, Finn wishes he could rub the dark fanged octagon from his chest away in a lather and finally feel the glares of pilots and soldiers leave the back of his head. He dipped his head in the tepid stream, squinting at his old designation that was marked there too between the foam of soap. FN-2187, two letters, a dash, and four numbers reminding him of what he was to the Order and what he might as well be to the rest of the Resistance; a Stormtrooper, a nonperson, an enemy. Poe leaned over, bumping shoulders with his buddy and suggesting a little step off base. After three rounds if clearance, a short flight, and one trip down to a bustling planet of merchants and shops Finn's chest ached anew but it was worth it for the three red slashes that cut through the black lines and his old designation replaced with FINN. He is Finn, he is a person, and he is part of the Resistance.

---

She had traded rations for the marks. The artist was in need of practice, so for two full portions Rey lent them the skin of her thigh. Over time the marks had faded, formerly green stems and leaves faded to an off grey much the same as the harsh Jakku sun faded the paint on ship hulls. She still traced the shapes with fondness, longing to remember the name of the plant they had scribed onto her flank. With gentle fingers she traced the raised lines of the single bloom up on her hip, no colour in its petals since the artist had caught a ship out of Niima outpost before they could finish their work. Finn says it should be a blue flower, like her lightsaber. Poe says it should be soft pink like a sunrise. Rey says she'll have it coloured golden yellow like the Jakku sands a sunset, a desert flower that has bloomed from the barren earth.

---

To say Poe Dameron is proud of his sleeves is an understatement. In the hangar he flaunts their brilliant colours under a layer of sweat and X-Wing grease, smirking as the muscles in his arms makes the A-Wing over his bicep sway in the deep blue black of space inked into his skin. Finn and Rey practically hang off his arms when he goes without sleeves, poring over the details and tracing every line with curious fingers as Poe tells them the stories of each one from the Rebel crest on his shoulder to the pale Force tree with blue leaves growing at his wrist. One day Finn and Rey pause as they come across fresh ink pricked into Poe's knuckles. On his right, the knuckles read FINN with a trooper helmet with three red slashes on the thumb. On his left, the knuckles read REY with a blue lightsaber inscribed down his pinkie. To say the two of them are flattered at the gesture is an understatement.

---

When Kylo Ren was a little boy named Ben, he saw a blue woman. She was so beautiful but so sad, and the flowers in her hair were comforting to smell after waking from a nightmare. She would always be there when he woke, sobbing and batting away images of the twisted, pale man with red eyes. She welcomed the sniffling child into her translucent arms and soothed him with songs, wordless and soft. Now Ben was dead and Kylo Ren lives in his place and the lady with flowers in her hair no longer visits him. Some nights he still wakes up trashing and screaming in terror, wishing the blue woman was still there to comfort him. All he has instead is a fading tattoo of a blue white flower at the nape of his neck, lines and colours blurring away as he bites his long fingers into it and steadies his breathing, murmuring snatches of wordless, soft songs.
