I just want a depressing modern Kylux AU that's either Southern or rural Midwestern American, where Hux is the product of white trash preppers who actually gave him the first name "General" and Ren was raised by a goddamn new age mystic who grew up meditating and reading auras and brewing teas according to the magical properties of herbs.

They escape this bullshit and go out into the real world (Hux on academic scholarship, Ren on athletics?), but are pulled back in. Or maybe they fail to escape it and their failure is crushing them.

Family conflicts as petty (Hux the only one of a dozen siblings who doesn't say "I seen," Ren shooting down his uncle's theories about blue solar water with SCIENCE) or as dark (Hux's dad a domineering incestuous disciplinarian, Ren's uncle still fully embroiled in the cult that raised Ren) as you like.

extra special bonus if this stuff they hate still occasionally benefits them (why yes, Ren CAN brew you a willow bark tea that helps with pain, and Hux's awful upbringing DID instill a remarkable sense of discipline in him)

General Starkiller was tried and found guilty.

But what of the others? The officers, the engineers, the material suppliers, the manual laborers, the New Republic traitors? Many of them remained loyal to the First Order to the last, unrepentant.

It was so much easier when the Deathstars blew up. Why did General Starkiller have to be so good at evacuating his minions?

And what of the First Order Academy cadets? Some are young men nearly full grown. The same mould that General Starkiller was made out of.

People of the New Republic screamed for blood. Are we not a democracy! Now hear the roar of the majority.

Leia won the war, but the Republic she loved was no more. It had killed its softer self after so many trials of suffering and blood and violence and war. But at least her son was back with her.

Ben Solo arrived at the execution site just as Dopheld Mitaka’s skinny neck snapped. Beside him Phasma was already hanging in the wind. At the end of the row of convicted officers, Hux raised his haggard face and looked back.

Kylo Ren’s lightsaber roared to life.

Kylo Ren and General Hux were married in a private civil ceremony years before the events of TFA.

Yes, they're genuinely in love. Yes, they work alongside one another. Yes, their marriage isn't common knowledge because they don't particularly feel like having their personal business exposed to the entire galaxy.

...and yes, their constant bickering and all-out fights in public view of stormtroopers etc *are* an extension of the affection they feel for one another.

+ If it comes out in a suitably dramatic/comedic way
++ If Kylo Ren insisted that Hux take *his* name, so now Hux has 'Ren' as a middle name.
+++ If Leia, Han, and any other members of the OT crew are uncomfortably reminded of Leia and Han's bickering/relationship...

I feel like I can picture Ren as Eva pretty well: the menace, the sudden mood switches, that wonderful sense of waiting-to-break-free.

But are you looking for Hux in Caleb's roll but still himself (you know, arrogant, zealous, angry-but-keeping-it-together)? Or more for Hux AS Caleb: awkward, kind of beta, overwhelmed by Nathan?

Imagine:
Kylo Ren assigning himself as Lord Protector.

Hux's quarters getting wrecked on a regular basis by tantrum Sith baby who forcefully moved in with him.

Rumor abound on the wild and kinky dark sex the two Commanders of the Finalizer must be having, to make the room look like THAT. The bed was in 3 pieces once.

Hux feels his life is more in danger than before he got a Lord Protector.

Hux the space ginger is insufferable. The Emperor's grandson's words should be gold. Kylo is so conflicted. Kylo is being torn apart.

Hux feels someone with lips like that should be at least somewhat competent at sucking dick. But Noooooo. His sex life now sucks. Kylo Ren keeps on chasing away all other prospective partners with his hissing and looming and Force chokes. The universe must hates him.

Inspired by the film About Time: Hux can travel back in time (as in redo a certain period of his own timeline) and uses his power extensively to be promoted General and be in charge of the Starkiller project. Then Kylo comes in, and no matter what Hux does they never become friends or even allies, like a fixed point in time. Hux gives up and continues to travel back in his timeline to make sure the Resistance is crushed. Post-TFA, he meets another fixed point: Starkiller is always destroyed and Snoke always decides to execute him as a punishment.
Hux repeats his own timeline hundreds of times only to realize one thing: if he wants to live, Kylo Ren must go back to the light side.

+Hux/Kylo in one of the timeline (whether it's the final one or just one of the many tries is up to OP)
+Hux getting force-choked about 250 times and being really, really tired of this trick
+Hux isn't afraid of Kylo because he's "seen it all before"

Kylo Ren is a wasteland Warlord who rules with a literal iron fist, just as his grandfather before him.
Captain Phasma controls the Star Destroyer, a bullet farm, while General Hux counts Ren's costs (mostly damage to his own vehicle)
Rey is his most trusted Imperator, she dreams of one day fleeing Ren's cruel citadel to find the family she was snatched from
Finalizer is a wartrooper who later was renamed Finn.
Poe is a raider from a group that refuses to bow to Ren's will, he accidentally strayed too far into Kylo's territory and was snatched off his bike by wartroopers
The Resistance has water, Kylo does not, Poe may be the lead he needs to get the water for himself and finally gain full control over the wasteland.

So p much blend equal parts Fury Road with Star Wars. Poe escapes initially in a car Finn was working on, then a sandstorm chokes them out and allows Rey in the Millennium Falcon to catch up and have a very confusing fistfight with Poe after he lunges at her (Finn is torn between helping his new friend and obeying a direct order from an Imperator). They all calm down and swap rides and finish driving out to the Resistance camp while also fighting off Hux, Phasma, and Ren.
