Luke can't go in exile without telling his sister what happened in person and saying goodbye to her. Even if he knows that Leia will try to make him stay, he at least owe this to her ... but to his shock she doesn't try to make him stay, instead she wants to come with him. She needs a break from everything as much as he does.

The galaxy can take care of itself without them for a while.
