The other Finalizer officers don't like Mitaka much (he's smart but kind of a dork), and they conspire to make sure the one who has to give Kylo any bad news is him.

Kylo doesn't realise there's a conspiracy, and ends up impressed that even though Mitaka's clearly terrified of him, he seems to volunteer for this duty. Feelings happen. Kylo being Kylo, he expresses those feelings with maximum prejudice. Mitaka's reaction is up to the author.
