Hux was severely injured as a child in a thunderstorm. He was struck by lightning but was rushed to a medical centre and treated in time. His body made a full recovery. Parts of his brain required reconstruction. Damaged sections of the brain were modified to create Brendol's idealised version of himself. Brendol Hux recreated his son to mentally be a younger version of himself. When Brendol dies he wants his brain put into Hux. Parts of himself are already in there. His brain in his son's body will make him immortal.
But Hux the younger still lives, just a smaller version underlying all his dad's impulses and wiring. Sometimes he comes through. Like when he lets Dameron and Fn-2187 escape. And his wide-eyed glassy horror when Starkiller fires to destroy Hosnian Prime. And it's all the son's doing when he runs to save Kylo Ren. All his dad wants is to save his future shell/self.
