Poe fully understands the significance of the stormtroopers cutting 'FN-2187' into Finn's skin. He gets that it is their way of reminding Finn of his 'place'. Not that Finn really belongs there anymore, or ever did. What Poe does not realize is that the stormtroopers that are taking turns cutting Finn's old designation into his body are his old squad mates. If he knew that little fact he would be even more horrified and sickened by this particular brand of torture. As is stands, the sight of blood dripping down Finn's limbs and torso and the sound of Finn hissing and grunting in pain are nearly sending Poe into tears. He hates being absolutely helpless to stop this.
Finn's heart had nearly stopped when he had realized what his former squad mates where carving into his flesh. He had recognized the stormtroopers as soon as they had removed their helmets, and the knowledge that his punishment was coming from the men that he had once depended on made this ordeal so much worse. Poe's presence is both a comfort and a source of distress for Finn. While it does bring Finn some comfort to know that Poe is not being harmed physically at the moment, having his friend witness his degradation and wanting to stay strong and not let Poe know how miserable he is is taking a toll on Finn. When the stormtroopers have each taken a turn and have begun to take a second turn, Finn can only be grateful that they have not turned their attentions to Poe.
