When Ben was born Leia had severe post natal depression, she wouldn't interact with Ben beyond the basics so Han was the main parent to Ben as a baby.When Ben was a toddler Leia had recovered but felt guilty for not being able to bond with Ben,feeling that Ben loved Han more.
Ben grew up close with his dad and Leia kept distant, thinking it was for the best, she had already failed Ben. When Ben turned 10 his dad took longer jobs off planet believing that Leia and Ben were fine together.
At 15, Ben is a moody, (slightly jealous of his younger cousin Rey) teenager, and hears Snoke's voice in his head driving him to SI. One day during an argument with his parents Ben explodes into an awful rant saying how he should have never been born. Resulting in a horrified Han and Leia sitting down and talking to Ben, reassuring him that they do love him and wondering why he would say those awful things.
